10. Weezer
Weezer was formed in 1992 and threads many of their songs with humor. Their 1994 debut Weezer (Blue Album) was critically praised and commercially successful. It yielded two hit singles, including “Buddy Holly” (#2). Their next two albums achieved platinum and the following two went gold and platinum respectively. Weezer has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide.
9. Stone Temple Pilots
Initially rising with the grunge scene, Stone Temple Pilots was formed in 1989. Their four 1990s-era albums all reached platinum or multi-platinum status. From 1993 to 1995, Stone Temple Pilots scored twelve top-20 singles on the US mainstream rock chart, including six reaching #1. Stone Temple pilots have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide.
8. Korn
Korn formed in 1993. They pioneered the nu-metal genre, combining elements of hip-hop and metal with detuned funk slap bass and eerie dissonant guitars. Of their 14 studio albums, 10 have gone platinum and two gold. They’ve won two Grammy awards out of eight nominations. Korn has sold more than 40 million records worldwide.
7. Creed
Creed was formed in 1994. Considered post-grunge, the group had a detuned heavy style that combined meaningful lyrics and soulful melodies. During the 90s, they scored 5 top three singles on the mainstream rock charts, with two hitting #1. Similar chart success continued into the 2000s. Creed sold over 53 million albums worldwide.
6. Rage Against the Machine
Formed in 1991, Rage Against the Machine (RATM) pioneered the rap rock genre. Guitarist Tom Morello innovated a soloing style that leaned more towards sound effects than notes. RATM received seven Grammy nominations and won twice. As of 2010, RATM had sold over 60 million records worldwide. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.
