10 Ways Vintage Tech Beats Out the Modern Versions

Is it hard for you to keep up with the ever-changing tech sphere? You aren’t alone! Sometimes people prefer the vintage version of something, instead of the modern version. If that sounds like you, then you will love this list! Here are 10 vintage tech items vs. their modern equivalent.

10. Vintage Watches

The old-school watches work just as well as the new ones. They do one thing, and that is to tell you what time it is. No fancy bells and whistles, just a little clock to bring with you. But they sure were stylish.

Today’s watches are not always just simply watches. In the case of smartwatches, they tell you more than just the time. They can tell you the weather, send you a text, or even tell you your heart rate. Sadly, for lots of people, the aesthetics just aren’t the same.

9. Vintage Phones

The phones of yesteryear were simple in that they just called people. Sometimes you would have to speak to an operator to get your call through, but most of the time you could just dial the number and reach the person you wanted to speak to. No fuss, just phone calls.

Phones these days are mini-computers you can carry around in your pocket. You can also take pictures with them, listen to music, browse the internet… the sky’s the limit on what you can do on your smart phone. But some of us do miss buttons you could actually push, and the stability of a landline.

8. Vintage Radios

Radios used to be mainly made for being in your home. You could change the dials to change the station and there wasn’t much else you could do with it. It sounds kind of nice to be limited to a couple of stations!

8. Modern Radios

Radios now can be mobile! You can listen to the radio on your phone or in your car. You can also have a radio in your house like back in the day. That’s not even mentioning the different streaming devices we’re surrounded with. There is no limit to where you can listen to the radio. But you’ve gotta admit, those vintage versions looked pretty cool.

7. Vintage Music

Records were all the rage back in the day (and still are to a lot of hip people). You would pop one into your record player and listen to a full album. Ah, the bliss of records!

7. Modern Music

Today listening to music is as easy as streaming from your favorite device. You can listen to whole albums or make your own playlists. There is a mobility with streaming music – you can stream almost anywhere. But there’s just something about that analog feel of a record player.

6. Vintage Cars

Vintage cars got you from point A to point B. They didn’t have anything really fancy (unless you count radios or cassette players), but they did exactly what they needed to. And let’s be honest, a lot of vintage cars look cooler than modern cars.

Modern cars are made to impress. They have a lot of extra features on them (especially those safety features) that old cars didn’t have. They also come with infotainment centers, which can connect to your phone, give you directions, manage your music, and so much more. Lots more features, lots less charm.

5. Vintage Cameras

Vintage cameras required rolls of film that you would need to get developed at a store. If you didn’t get the pictures developed, then you wouldn’t get to see them. And you had to trust your own eye when taking photos because there wasn’t a screen to show you how it looked.

5. Modern Cameras

Instead of film, cameras now take SD cards. You can still develop your photos, but the process is different now. You also have a screen on your camera where you can view the photo you’re about to snap, all in your camera. But there’s something we miss about holding physical pictures in our hands, you know?

4. Vintage Typewriters

Oh to listen to the clickety-clack of a typewriter! Typewriters were good for typing papers and your next great American novel. Typing with one of these was a little more manual than today, but you still could get the job done.

4. Modern Computers

Computers obviously offer much more than typing. You can access the internet, edit photos, create podcasts – the list goes on and on. When it comes to typing, you just need to open a Word document. (Just remember to hit save!) We sure do miss that retro style, though!

3. Vintage Gaming

To play your favorite games, you used to have to sit in front of your television, playing on your game console (unless you had a portable Game Boy). There was something nice about sitting in front of the TV for hours, trying to beat your game, and handling physical cartridges!

3. Modern – Gaming

Gaming still happens in front of the television set (except now games are on discs and not cartridges). However, you can also do a lot of gaming wherever you are, thanks to the invention of smart phones and the Nintendo Switch.

VHS tapes were what a lot of people remember watching their childhood favorites on. They really do bring the nostalgia factor these days. The one flaw they had? You had to rewind them. Which would obviously ruin your entire day.

Blu-rays are a good way to watch your favorite movies and shows. I know that streaming exists and so does 4K, but the Blu-ray is still the more popular of physical media. But while you might have had to rewind a VHS tape, if you merely scratch or smudge your Blu-ray, it’s game over.

1. Vintage Vacuums

Vacuuming has been around for a long time and most of it is manual. You have to physically turn the vacuum on and move it around to clean. Not the most fun thing to do, perhaps, but at least you can control what and where you want to clean!

1. Modern Vacuums

The modern vacuum is literally a robot doing the work for you. You can turn it on and then it will go around the room cleaning up the floor. The most manual thing is pressing the on and off button. It’s more convenient, but is it really as effective? They are cute, though. Bonus points if you put googly eyes on them.
