Derek Jeter Calls Out Yankees’ Slump

Derek Jeter spent 20 years as the face of the New York Yankees. But even legends lose patience. With the team struggling in August, Jeter isn’t holding back — and Aaron Boone is feeling the heat.

After starting the 2025 season strong, the Yankees have slid into third place in the AL East with a 60–51 record. Despite a busy trade deadline, the team has stumbled badly. Friday night saw the bullpen blow a 9–4 lead to the Miami Marlins, and Saturday brought more frustration with a 3–1 loss marred by mental mistakes.

Base running errors by Trent Grisham and Jazz Chisholm Jr. stood out and Jeter took notice. Speaking on FOX’s Speedway Classic broadcast Saturday, the Hall of Famer was blunt in his assessment.

“They make way too many mistakes,” he said. “You can’t make those kinds of errors and expect to win against great teams. Grisham getting thrown out at the plate is just one example. You’ve got to clean that up.”

Jeter didn’t stop there.

“There are no excuses,” he added. “You either play better or you go nowhere.”

Former Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez also weighed in during the broadcast. “I see mistake after mistake, and no one’s held accountable,” A-Rod said.

Boone didn’t shy away from responding. Speaking to reporters Sunday, the manager defended the team’s internal process.

“I’d disagree a bit on the accountability part,” Boone said. “But I get it. When things aren’t going the way they should, this is what comes with it. We’re focused every day on getting better.”

The pressure is mounting in the Bronx. With the postseason picture tightening, the Yankees will need more than strong words, they’ll need sharp execution.
