20 NBA Lottery Picks Who Never Lived Up to the Headline

Every NBA Draft brings with it a wave of hope, hype, and headlines. Teams dream of snagging the next superstar, fans get emotionally attached to names they barely knew a week ago, and analysts start talking in “potential” like it’s currency.

But not every lottery pick pans out, and some flame out so fast it’s hard to believe they were ever supposed to be the future. Whether it was injuries, bad fits, or just plain overestimation, these 20 players never quite lived up to the promise that came with hearing their name on draft night.

He had the nickname, the international mystery, and the defensive upside. But New York wanted a franchise star, not just a role player who occasionally locked someone down.

19. Wesley Johnson

He was supposed to be the “safe” pick with NBA-ready skills. Instead, he was mostly known for getting crossed into another dimension by James Harden.

18. Thomas Robinson

The hustle was real, but so was the lack of offensive polish. Five teams in three years is not exactly the sign of a thriving career.

17. Nik Stauskas

Phoenix Suns guard Jamal Crawford (11) shoots over Cleveland Cavaliers guard Nik Stauskas (1) during the second half at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

“Sauce Castillo” had a fun nickname and a sweet stroke in college. In the NBA, though, the shot rarely landed and the sauce dried up quickly.

16. Adam Morrison

Portland Trail Blazers forward Adam Morrison (6) reacts on the court during the game against the Phoenix Suns at US Airways Center. The Suns defeated the Trail Blazers 104-93.

The mustache was iconic, and the college scoring was legit. But once he hit the NBA, the game was too fast and the jumper too shaky.

15. Emmanuel Mudiay

He skipped college to go pro early overseas, which only added to the intrigue. Unfortunately, the skills never quite matched the hype when he arrived in the league.

14. Derrick Williams

He could jump out of the gym and look like a modern forward. But he never figured out exactly what kind of player he was supposed to be.

13. Hasheem Thabeet

Oklahoma City Thunder center Hasheem Thabeet (34) passes the ball during the fourth quarter against the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center. The Rockets defeated the Thunder 122-119.

A 7’3” shot-blocker taken second overall sounds great on paper. But he was more size than substance and quickly became a cautionary tale.

12. Marvin Williams

Milwaukee Bucks forward Marvin Williams (20) drives to the basket against Orlando Magic guard Evan Fournier (10) and guard D.J. Augustin (14) during the second quarter in game five of the first round of the 2020 NBA Playoffs at AdventHealth Arena.

He was drafted over Chris Paul and Deron Williams, and that’s all you need to know. Solid career, sure, but not lottery-headline material.

11. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

Defense? Great. Effort? Always there. But that jump shot looked like it was designed by someone who had never seen basketball before.

10. Jimmer Fredette

College legend. NBA ghost. Turns out range doesn’t matter if you can’t guard anyone or get your shot off.

9. Dario Šarić

Denver Nuggets forward Dario Saric (9) reacts in the second half against the LA Clippers at Ball Arena.

The “stash him overseas” plan built anticipation. But when he finally arrived, he was more of a rotation guy than a future franchise piece.

8. Josh Jackson

Phoenix Suns forward Josh Jackson (20) dribbles the ball against Houston Rockets center Clint Capela (15) during the third quarter at Toyota Center.
Troy Taormina / Imagn Images

Big-time athlete with defensive upside and college hype. But his decision-making made every possession feel like a gamble.

7. Kris Dunn

Elite defender coming out of college with just enough playmaking to excite teams. Unfortunately, his offensive game stayed stuck in neutral.

6. Dragan Bender

Golden State Warriors forward Dragan Bender (10) dribbles the basketball during the fourth quarter against the Washington Wizards at Chase Center.

He had the height, the mobility, and that “modern big man” label. But on the court, it looked like he was constantly trying to remember the play.

5. Jan Veselý

Washington Wizards forward Jan Vesely (24) drives to the basket and scores during the first half of the game against the Charlotte Bobcats at Time Warner Cable Arena.
Sam Sharpe / Imagn Images

Dubbed the “European Blake Griffin,” which is about as ambitious as it gets. He brought dunks and vibes, but very little actual impact.

4. Ben McLemore

Toronto Raptors guard Gary Trent Jr. (33) controls the ball as Portland Trail Blazers guard Ben McLemore (23) flies past looking to block a shot in the second half at Scotiabank Arena.

Smooth jumper, clean athleticism, and tons of promise. But the inconsistency was brutal, and the spark never lasted more than a week at a time.

3. Anthony Bennett

The surprise No. 1 pick no one saw coming… and then everyone saw why. He just never looked like he belonged on an NBA floor.

Injuries, shooting woes, and an awkward start turned a surefire No. 1 pick into a mystery case. He’s carved out a role, but it’s nothing close to the stardom people expected.

The poster child for premature draft hype. Picked between LeBron and Carmelo, his career was more about “what if” than “what now.”
