Shohei Ohtani is set to make his long-awaited return to the mound for the Dodgers on Monday night, marking his first pitching appearance in nearly two years. The team confirmed the news after Sunday’s 5-4 win over San Francisco. This sets the stage for Ohtani to open a four-game series against the Padres in Los Angeles.
According to manager Dave Roberts, Ohtani will likely be used as an opener and pitch just one or two innings.
“Shohei is getting antsy, which is a good thing for us,” Roberts said. “The live, simulated, or whatever, sort of ran its course. He’s ready to make his debut on the mound.”
Ohtani hasn’t pitched since August 23, 2023, when he sustained an elbow injury while with the Angels. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018 and another procedure on September 19, 2023. This return marks a major milestone in his recovery and comeback as a two-way superstar.

In the second year of his record-breaking $700 million contract, shohei ohtani has continued to dominate at the plate. Batting .297 with 25 home runs, 41 RBIs, and a league-best 1.035 OPS. But with several Dodgers pitchers out, including Roki Sasaki, Blake Snell, and Tyler Glasnow, his return to the rotation comes at a critical time.
Sasaki, a rookie from Japan, has been sidelined since May 9 with shoulder issues and is unlikely to return soon. The Dodgers have leaned heavily on bullpen games, making Ohtani’s presence even significant.
“There’s been a lot of anticipation,” Roberts said. “It’s good for our team. Our guys are excited. And most of all, I’m excited for Shohei.”
Even if his first outing is brief, Ohtani’s return signals a major step forward, not just for his dual-threat role but for the Dodgers’ playoff push.
