When we travel abroad, we can inadvertently bring bad habits with us that are harmful to the communities of others. However, a few simple changes are all that’s needed. Here are ten ways to travel sustainably.
10. Bring a Reusable Water Bottle
Bring a reusable water bottle rather than buying plastic bottles of water everywhere you go. Not only is this cost-effective, but it’s convenient in many cities. For example, there is no shortage of public water fountains in Rome. Also, look for a collapsible, reusable water bottle that can easily be fitted into small bags.
9. Bring Travel Containers
Instead of purchasing travel-size toiletries the next time you hit the road, consider buying reusable travel containers. The upside is this will allow you to bring all of your favorite beauty, body, and cosmetic products with you. Plus, reusable travel containers are designed to be leakproof, refillable, and washable, and many are made from Earth-kind material.
8. Utilize E-tickets
Instead of using paper and/or printing your own tickets, try to use e-tickets as much as possible. You’re likely to have your smartphone with you everywhere you go. Therefore, you’ll always have your ticket in the palm of your hand. Choosing virtual ticket options instead of paper will help save trees and the environment.
7. Get a Compactable Tote
Environmentally friendly compatible totes come in a variety of shapes, styles, and functionality. They also come in various sizes, even those that will compact into pocket-size. They are lightweight, water-resistant, strong, and durable. They can be found with zip closures and shoulder straps. Some stores may not provide grocery bags or will charge you for each one, so be prepared.
6. Use Public Transit
Instead of renting a car, use public transportation, such as buses or trains. In many locales, that is how residents get around. However, in some locations, you may want to rent a bicycle. In addition to being eco-friendly, you’ll get to experience the city like a local rather than a tourist.
5. Conserve Water and Energy
Practice environmentally-conscious habits abroad by being mindful of your energy and water usage. For example, short showers, reusing lending, hanging laundry to dry, or brushing your teeth without the water running. Turn off the TV and lights, get out, see things, and meet people. That’s what you’re there to do, right?
4. Use Biodegradable Products
Different locales have different environmental laws. Products brought from America might be banned in certain countries. Therefore, take the safe route by bringing and using only biodegradable products when you travel. Whether it’s bug spray, sunscreen, or cleaning solutions, make sure you are using products that will break down and are kind to the Earth.
3. Buy Local
To really experience life like a local when you travel, consider buying food from local markets and restaurants rather than only eating at your hotel. Purchase fruit and vegetables from local produce stands and markets. Dine at local restaurants or from food vendors. Skip the hotel gift shop or tourist trap and purchase souvenirs from local artists and craftsmen.

2. Eat Less Meat
Eating less meat is as simple as going vegetarian one day each week or eating one vegetarian meal daily. It’s important to consider how our dietary choices affect the planet. The carbon footprint of a meat-heavy diet is drastically higher compared to a vegetarian diet. Red meat requires 28 times more land and 11 times more water than raising poultry.

1. Teach Others
Encourage others to develop more environmentally friendly habits when they travel. Share what you know and teach others how easy it is to develop “green” habits. Being sustainable while you travel shows respect to the community you are visiting, as well as to the earth as a whole. By making a few simple changes, all humankind will benefit.
