The 10 Worst Witch Movies Ever Made

There are so many wonderfully made witch movies out there. And not a single one of them are on this list. Happy spooky season!

10. Oz the Great and Powerful

Oz the great and powerful
Walt Disney Pictures

By far the worst film on this list and possibly the worst witch film of all time is Oz the Great and Powerful. This film tells the backstory of the titular character from The Wizard of Oz. It also provides a backstory for the Wicked Witch of the West. Between the ugly hyper-saturated colors in the set design, the abysmal dialogue, and the phoned-in performances, it’s no wonder why everyone has forgotten about this film.

9. Season of the Witch (The Nic Cage Version)

Relativity Media

Not to be confused with the superior George A. Romero film of the same name, this film was almost as forgettable as Oz the Great and Powerful. The movie follows the story of two knights who return from The Crusades to find their home ravaged by the plague. They learn that a woman is being accused by two monks of being a witch and starting the plague. The movie itself is plagued by bad CGI and a boring plot. Not even Ron Perlman could save this movie.

8. Bewitched

Bewitched
Columbia Pictures

Regardless of how you feel about the original television series, I think we can all agree that the film is just a tragic attempt at comedy. Some of the sight gags are cute. Like when Nicole Kidman’s character uses a tarot card as a credit card. But the main plot of casting a real witch in a reboot of the the Bewitched television show is just too convoluted to be enjoyable.

7. Initiation of Sarah (1978)

If a film is going to be bad, the least it can do is be funny. And this film commits the cardinal sin of bad movies. It’s so boring. Not even award-winning actress Shelley Winters could make this film entertaining. Not only is it bland, it’s so mean-spirited! You know it’s bad when it’s 2006 made-for-TV remake is the better watch.

6. Sabrina The Teenage Witch

Viacom Productions

The concept for Sabrina The Teenage Witch was a great premise for a sitcom. It was a good premise for a cartoon. And it was an… okay premise for a gritty Netflix horror series. But as a movie, the idea of a teenage girl using her witch powers for hilarious high school hijinks just doesn’t work for a 90 minute film. Also, Ryan Reynolds should never be blonde.

5. I’ve Been Waiting For You

ive been waiting for you
NBC Studios

We are starting to get into so-bad-it’s-good territory. Though this film is not as funny as most so-bad-it’s-good movies, it’s still pretty riffable. The film follows outsider Sarah as she is ostracized by her classmates because they think she is the reincarnation of a murderous witch. The witch representation is pretty standard for a cheesy made-for-TV movie. And real witches may get annoyed that the writers mistakenly labeled Aquarius as a water sign.

4. Initiation of Sarah (2006)

ABC Family

The 2006 remake of the 1978 film is placed higher on the list because it’s the superior film. It follows college student Sarah, who tries to control her magical powers while navigating sorority hell week and trying to stop an evil coven from sacrificing her. The movie is filmed to the brim with early 2000’s cheesy exposition dialogue. It doesn’t really follow the rule of show, don’t tell. But the plot is easier to follow than its predecessor. All the actors do a decent job and they seem to be having fun.

3. The Last Keepers

BCDF Pictures

The Last Keepers is what you watch when you can’t find Practical Magic on any of your streaming services. The story gets points for creativity and the acting is pretty decent. But the film has a mean spirited tone and the plot is confusing. Plus at one point the main character’s pet goats get murdered, which was just unnecessary.

2. Teen Witch

Trans World Entertainment

This movie was supposed to be like Teen Wolf but for girls. Teen Witch is a cheesy 80s time capsule that tells the story of Louise Miller, a shy nerdy girl who yearns for the most popular boy at her school. She learns that she’s a witch and uses her powers to become popular and beautiful. The writing is vapid and the plot is weak, but the performances are endearing. This movie also has the cringiest rap scene ever put on film. Top that!

1. Witches of Eastwick

Warner Bros.

Okay okay Internet denizens, put your pitchforks down. I know a lot of you think this movie is great. You’re entitled to your wrong opinion. Now to be fair, I do think this film is the best one on the list. It’s the best of the worst. Though it is fun, it has its issues. The movie uses magic as a metaphor for female empowerment. But the problem is that the three main female characters get their power from a misogynistic male. Their power and their lives all center around this man. And though you can argue that they destroy him, they still admit at the end of the movie that they miss him. Which just feels icky.
