WNBA Team Waives Guard to Sign Caitlin Clark’s Former Fever Teammate

The Phoenix Mercury made a key roster shake-up this week, parting ways with guard Kiana Williams to make room for veteran forward DeWanna Bonner, formerly of the Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark’s teammate earlier this season.

While the WNBA’s tight 12-player roster limit has made these types of moves inevitable, the release of Williams still drew reactions around the league. The former Stanford standout had averaged 5.3 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game in limited action this year. Further offering solid depth behind Kahleah Copper and Sami Whitcomb.

Williams, ever professional, responded to the news gracefully.

“I’m just grateful for the opportunity,” she told reporters via the Mercury’s official X account.

Bonner Brings WNBA Playoff Experience to Phoenix Mercury

The signing of DeWanna Bonner, a six-time All-Star, brings immediate playoff-tested experience to a Mercury squad eyeing a strong finish to the 2025 WNBA season. Bonner most recently played for the Connecticut Sun. But began this season with the Indiana Fever, where she averaged 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.1 steals across nine games.

Bonner’s departure from Indiana was reportedly tied to her dissatisfaction with a bench role. Phoenix offers her a fresh start and likely more minutes as they gear up for a postseason push.

Though waived, Kiana Williams remains a promising young player with professional poise. She was originally drafted by the Seattle Storm in 2021 and also had a short stint with Connecticut before joining Phoenix. As more WNBA teams look to build depth amid rising talent, Williams could very well find a new opportunity soon.
