WNBA Officiating Under Fire as Angel Reese Nears Suspension

Angel Reese One Tech Away from Suspension as Fans Slam WNBA Refs

After her All-Star break, Angel Reese returned to the Chicago Sky lineup and wasted no time making headlines. In Tuesday’s clash against the Minnesota Lynx, the 22-year-old forward didn’t just deliver her signature double-double, she earned her seventh technical foul of the season.

With the WNBA’s extended 44-game schedule, players now face suspension after eight technicals, meaning Reese is just one whistle away from sitting out a game. But fans weren’t exactly calling her out. Instead, they were calling out the referees.

Fans Blast WNBA Refs for “Inconsistency”

Despite Reese’s performance — 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists — what went viral was her latest run-in with officiating. Social media exploded with criticism toward the league’s refs. “Refs are awful in the WNBA,” one fan commented, echoing sentiments shared by many players across the league this season.

It’s not just Reese feeling the heat. From Caitlin Clark’s Flagrant 1 in the season opener to questionable calls involving Aliyah Boston, Kelsey Plum, and Brittney Griner, the spotlight on referees is intensifying. Washington Mystics center Queen Egbo said it best: “There seems to be inconsistencies in how the referees are calling certain games…”

Reese has been vocal, even risking fines to call out what she believes are biased calls. Earlier this month, after another game against the Lynx, she described the officiating as “diabolical,” citing missed whistles on clear contact. In total, Reese’s techs have piled up across multiple matchups, against teams like the Liberty, Sparks, Mystics, and Fever. With several called for emotionally charged but arguably minor reactions.

What’s Next for Reese

While critics say she needs to dial it back, supporters argue that her passion is part of what makes her so magnetic. Reese now leads the league in technical fouls, and one more will trigger an automatic suspension. Will the WNBA address the officiating concerns? Or will Angel Reese have to play it safe to stay on the court?

Either way, the Chi-Town Barbie isn’t backing down. And the fans? They’re watching, closely.
