The Golden State Warriors may be preparing to move on from Jonathan Kuminga, but his future is anything but certain. After a disappointing 4–1 series loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, trade talks surrounding the 21-year-old forward are heating up.
Kuminga’s role in Golden State has been rocky for four seasons. His absence in the regular-season finale and benching during the Houston series raised major questions. He only returned to the floor after Stephen Curry suffered a hamstring injury. Even then, his playing time was limited and mostly situational. Although he showed flashes of promise late against Minnesota, many inside the organization feel his time with the Warriors is nearing its end.
Will Jonathan Kuminga Stay as a Warrior?
Not everyone in the Warriors organization is ready to give up on him. Team owner Joe Lacob remains one of Kuminga’s most vocal supporters. Speaking with The Athletic, Lacob said:
“Kuminga’s the guy [the T’Wolves fans] talked about all night long. He’s the only guy that could really guard [Anthony Edwards] out there. Did a pretty damn good job. I’m a big fan of his.”
Lacob played a key role in drafting Kuminga in 2021 and has consistently defended his potential. According to league insiders, Lacob is unlikely to let Kuminga leave without a return. That’s where things get complicated.
The Warriors are expected to extend a $10.2 million qualifying offer, making Kuminga a restricted free agent. This gives Golden State the right to match any deal he receives, maintaining leverage in any potential trade or contract negotiation.
Sign-and-Trade Could Be the Answer
Despite the support, reports from ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel suggest the Warriors plan to work on a sign-and-trade deal for Kuminga. With Jimmy Butler now in the picture, Kuminga’s role no longer fits the team’s direction.
Draymond Green acknowledged the uncertainty, saying:
“Obviously JK has got the contract situation. I always wish him the best with that… whether it’s here or elsewhere.”
While Kuminga could bring value in a trade, Golden State risks losing a young, athletic wing defender who still has upside. There’s strong momentum for a departure, but the NBA is never predictable. Kuminga may still have one more chapter left in the Bay Area.
