Trey Lance to Start Hall of Fame Game for Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers have named Trey Lance their starting quarterback at least for this week. Head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Tuesday that Lance will get the nod for the team’s Hall of Fame Game matchup. A match against the Detroit Lions in Canton, Ohio, per reporter Omar Navarro.
According to Navarro, Lance is expected to play the entire first half and one series in the third quarter before undrafted rookie DJ Uiagalelei takes over. The decision means starter Justin Herbert will sit out, which is standard procedure during the preseason.
A Key Showcase for Trey Lance’s Future
The Chargers signed Lance to a one-year deal worth up to $6.2 million this offseason. After a brief stint with the Dallas Cowboys, he’s now hoping to use the preseason to showcase his skills and revive his trajectory.
Originally drafted third overall in 2021 by the San Francisco 49ers. Lance’s early promise was derailed by injuries and the sudden emergence of Brock Purdy. After serving as the Cowboys’ third-string QB in 2023. This preseason marks his best chance yet to prove he still has starter potential.

Though Lance isn’t expected to challenge Herbert for the starting job, a strong performance could boost his trade value or help him land a better opportunity in 2026 free agency. The physical tools are there, it’s all about consistency and staying healthy.
The Hall of Fame Game is just the start, but for Trey Lance, it might be the beginning of something bigger.
