Stephen A. Smith Calls Out WNBA Stars for Caitlin Clark Resentment

Stephen A. Smith is no stranger to controversy, and once again, he’s not holding back. On the June 4 episode of the PBD Podcast, the ESPN personality unleashed a passionate critique of the growing resentment toward Caitlin Clark within the WNBA.

What Caitlin Clark Represents

Smith believes the backlash isn’t personal. Instead, he says it’s about the unprecedented attention and opportunity Caitlin Clark represents.

“It’s really not about [Clark], guys. It’s about what she represents,” Smith said. “This girl, the golden goose, comes along, and she wreaks havoc.”

Despite a strong rookie season with the Indiana Fever, Caitlin Clark’s spotlight, from endorsement deals to national headlines, has ruffled feathers across the league. According to Smith, that’s where the tension lies.

Stephen A. Smith didn’t deny that the frustration from WNBA veterans is valid.

“It’s not about hating on her… It’s that you feel she is getting a level of attention that you deserved.”

However, he warned that this resentment is beginning to shape the tone and public narrative of the league in a negative way.

Smith made a point many fans and analysts are quietly echoing: resentment can motivate, but it can also divide.

“You almost feel like you have some folks within the WNBA that would rather not be in a fruitful position because of their resentment toward her.”

At a time when Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Cameron Brink are bringing in record viewership, Smith says it’s crucial that the WNBA moves forward as a unified front.

Stephen A. Smith has addressed this issue before, but his June 4 rant was his most direct yet. He’s urging players, coaches, and fans to recognize the bigger picture: Caitlin Clark’s fame isn’t just about her, it’s a chance for the entire league to grow.

“Eventually, resentment must be replaced by unity and professionalism,” Smith said.
