10 Sports Rivalries That Are All Hype, No Heat

Sports rivalries are supposed to be fueled by history, drama, and a healthy dose of bad blood. But not every matchup lives up to the hype. Some so-called rivalries are more about marketing than real animosity, with players swapping jerseys and fans acting more like polite neighbors than sworn enemies.

Here are 10 sports rivalries that sound intense on paper but are really just empty hype.

10. Los Angeles Lakers vs. Los Angeles Clippers

This one should be fiery given the shared city and arena, but it’s mostly just a battle for billboard space. Until the Clippers win a title, this “rivalry” will feel like a big brother-little brother situation.

It’s the NFL’s oldest rivalry, and while the fan animosity is still strong, the Packers have dominated for much of the modern era. That imbalance makes the matchup feel more historic than competitive lately.

8. Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Commanders

There was a time when this was the nastiest feud in the NFL, but it’s lost a lot of steam in recent years. Now it’s more about tradition than actual tension.

7. Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid

The Madrid derby is packed with passion, but Real Madrid’s global dominance has often overshadowed Atletico’s efforts. Still, recent league titles and intense matchups have kept the rivalry alive and burning.

6. Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Ottawa Senators

There’s plenty of Canadian pride on the line, but it’s hard to get too fired up when one side consistently struggles to make the playoffs. This one’s more about geography than genuine dislike.

5. New York Yankees vs. New York Mets

The Subway Series has its moments, but it rarely gets truly heated. With the Yankees owning the city’s history and the Mets living in their shadow, this rivalry often feels more forced than fierce.

4. UCLA vs. USC (Basketball)

While their football rivalry has plenty of heat, the basketball side is a bit of a snooze. It’s hard to get too riled up when one program has a handful of national titles and the other is still trying to build a hoops legacy.

3. Manchester United vs. Manchester City (Pre-2008)

This one got spicy once City started winning titles, but before then, it was a pretty one-sided affair. For decades, City was just the noisy neighbor trying to get a word in.
