Bayless Questions Protest, Credits Clark for WNBA Growth
Skip Bayless is stirring the pot once again, this time taking aim at WNBA All-Stars after their bold statement during All-Star Weekend.
On Saturday, every player at the WNBA All-Star Game wore shirts bearing a direct message: “Pay Us What You Owe Us.” The slogan was a clear push for higher salaries, aimed at league officials amid a period of explosive growth for the sport. While most fans applauded the solidarity, Bayless had a different take.
He tweeted: “Pay Us What You Owe Us” (thanks to Caitlin Clark).
It was a blunt reminder of something many have noted, Clark’s arrival has coincided with the WNBA’s booming popularity. The Indiana Fever star has become a national sensation, drawing massive TV ratings, selling out arenas, and elevating jersey sales across the board. Whether at home or on the road, Clark’s presence alone has filled seats and fueled excitement.
Bayless, a longtime supporter of Caitlin Clark, suggested that players should recognize her impact rather than push a message that ignores her influence. He has also been critical of some of her more vocal peers, including Angel Reese, who labeled those opposing the pay push as “disrespectful.”
Clark Supports the Movement, But Tensions Rise
Though Caitlin Clark didn’t suit up for the All-Star Game, she still donned the shirt and later clarified her stance to reporters. She voiced full support for the league’s union-led efforts to secure better pay.
“That’s one of the things we’re in the room fighting for,” she said. “We should be paid more, and hopefully that’s the case moving forward.”
Caitlin Clark emphasized the unity among players during Thursday’s negotiation session with WNBA leadership, one that ended in disappointment, with some calling it a “wasted opportunity.”
With the league now boasting a $2.2 billion media rights deal and expansion teams on the way, players are demanding a piece of the pie. Yet Bayless insists that those paychecks wouldn’t be possible without Clark’s star power igniting this new wave of fandom.
The debate continues, but one thing is clear: this pay conversation isn’t ending anytime soon.
