Biles Acknowledges Misstep in Riley Gaines Dispute
Simone Biles is facing backlash and offering an apology after a fiery social media exchange with collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines over the inclusion of transgender athletes in girls’ sports. The debate was sparked when Gaines criticized a Minnesota high school softball team’s championship win, claiming a transgender player gave them an unfair advantage.
Gaines tweeted, “Your star player is a boy,” drawing national attention. Biles, in defense of inclusivity, initially fired back, calling Gaines “truly sick” and accusing her of bullying. However, Biles has since walked back her comment, acknowledging that her tone lacked the “empathy and respect” needed in such a sensitive conversation.
Simone Biles: “I Apologize for Getting Personal”
In her follow-up post, Biles expressed regret:
“The current system doesn’t adequately balance competitive equity and inclusivity, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges. It didn’t help for me to get personal with Riley, which I apologize for.”
She emphasized that she was not advocating for unfair advantages but believes both fairness and inclusion are essential pillars in sports.
“These are sensitive, complicated issues that I truly don’t have the answers to… but I believe it starts with empathy and respect.”
Riley and Others Respond
Despite Biles’ apology, Gaines criticized the response:
“This is so disappointing… Simone Biles being a male-apologist at the expense of young girls’ dreams? Didn’t have that on my bingo card.”
Former NASCAR driver Danica Patrick also weighed in, voicing her support for Gaines and suggesting that “common sense will prevail” in the ongoing policy discussions around transgender athletes.
The debate highlights a growing divide over how sports organizations should address fairness, identity, and inclusion, especially in youth and high school sports. Biles’ apology may help de-escalate the rhetoric, but the larger policy debate is far from over.
As one of the most decorated athletes of all time, Biles’ voice carries significant weight, and now, she’s calling for more empathetic and solution-oriented dialogue moving forward.
