Sabrina Ionescu Reacts After Liberty’s Historic Win

The New York Liberty are off to a historic start in the 2025 WNBA season, going 8-0 to tie the Minnesota Lynx for the best record in the league. But if you ask Sabrina Ionescu, the job is far from done.

Liberty Stay Undefeated in Commissioner’s Cup Action

In their latest win, New York defeated the Washington Mystics 86-78 on Thursday, improving to 2-0 in Commissioner’s Cup play. It wasn’t Sabrina Ionescu’s best night, she hit just 3 of 17 from the field, but Breanna Stewart stepped up with 26 points and 11 rebounds, including 10-of-13 from the free-throw line.

The victory marks the best start in franchise history and puts the Liberty in prime position to defend their 2024 WNBA title.

Sabrina Ionescu: “That’s Not What Our Goal Is”

Despite the undefeated record, Ionescu made it clear in her postgame comments that the team isn’t celebrating just yet.

“Obviously 8-0 is great, but that’s not what our goal is,” said Ionescu. “We’re going to take every single game one by one and continue to just try to be better.”

On the season, Ionescu is averaging 17.3 points and 5.0 assists per game and remains a consistent All-Star presence, earning selections the past three years.

Leading the WNBA on Both Ends

This year’s Liberty squad isn’t just winning, they’re dominating. The team leads the league in:

  • Points per game: 91.1
  • Field-goal percentage: 47.8%
  • Three-point shooting: 38.2%
  • Offensive rating: 112.0
  • Defensive rating: 88.6

That balance on both ends makes New York a serious threat to become the second team in 20 years to win back-to-back WNBA championships.

The road ahead won’t be easy. The Indiana Fever, led by young talent despite injury woes, and the always-dangerous Minnesota Lynx, who nearly dethroned them in the 2024 Finals, remain key threats in the East.

Still, the message from Ionescu and the Liberty is clear: They’re just getting started.
