Rebecca Lobo Blasts Refs for Ignoring Fouls on Caitlin Clark

ESPN’s Lobo Calls Out Lack of Protection for Caitlin Clark

During Sunday’s nationally televised game between the Indiana Fever and Dallas Wings. Rebecca Lobo took a strong stance against what many fans have called out all season; the lack of calls when Caitlin Clark is fouled.

In the opening quarter, Clark drove aggressively to the basket and was clearly met with multiple points of contact from Dallas rookie JJ Quinerly. Despite the sequence including a grab, a hold, and more, referees didn’t blow the whistle until the very end.

“There’s a grab, there’s a hold, there’s another grab, every single one of those is a foul,” Lobo exclaimed, as ESPN rolled the replays.

Her broadcast partner, Ryan Ruocco, echoed her frustration, noting how physical defenders are allowed to be when guarding Caitlin Clark.

Ongoing Frustration with WNBA Officiating

This isn’t the first time officiating around Caitlin Clark has been in the spotlight. The Fever, and many around the league, have grown increasingly vocal about how often Clark gets hit with minimal foul calls to show for it.

Earlier this season, Sophie Cunningham called out WNBA referees for failing to “protect” Clark from excessive contact. Indiana head coach Stephanie White has also shared similar concerns. Further urging the league to ensure fairness, especially for high-profile young talent.

Clark has already missed nine games due to lower-body injuries, making her physical safety a bigger talking point. For a guard expected to be one of the WNBA’s biggest attractions, the league’s officials are now under the microscope.

Clark Still Delivers Despite Physical Play

Despite the heavy contact and limited whistles, Clark maintained her composure. She calmly knocked down both free throws she eventually earned. And she continued to make an impact for the Fever. Heading into halftime, Indiana was still in control refusing to let the officiating dictate the momentum.

Clark hasn’t directly commented on this particular game’s calls. But the chorus of support from voices like Lobo adds more weight to the ongoing discussion. As the WNBA continues to grow in visibility, how it protects its stars: particularly Caitlin Clark, will remain a hot topic.
