Ranking the Top 7 Biggest Ballon d’Or Snubs in Soccer History

The Ballon d’Or is the most coveted individual award in football. But sometimes, even greatness isn’t enough. Here are seven all-time icons who delivered world-class performances, yet never took home the golden ball.

7. Paolo Maldini

25 years at AC Milan. Five Champions League finals. Yet no Ballon d’Or. Maldini is perhaps the greatest defender of all time, and defenders rarely get their due.

6. Xavi Hernandez

He was the brain behind Spain’s golden era and Barcelona’s tiki-taka dominance. Despite multiple top-three finishes, Xavi was always overshadowed by teammates Messi and Ronaldo.

5. Thierry Henry

In his prime, Henry was untouchable. The 2003 and 2006 seasons were especially strong, but he was edged out both times despite record-breaking numbers.

4. Neymar

At his best, Neymar could’ve easily claimed the crown. Injuries and Messi-Ronaldo dominance derailed his Ballon d’Or dreams, though he still remains one of the most gifted players of this era.

3. Andrés Iniesta

Winning everything with Spain and Barcelona, Iniesta delivered legendary performances, including the 2010 World Cup-winning goal. Yet the Ballon d’Or never came his way.

2. Robert Lewandowski

Lewandowski should have won in 2020 after a record-breaking season. But COVID canceled the award that year, a cruel twist for one of football’s most prolific scorers. Although he was given an Iconic award the following year.

1. Wesley Sneijder

In 2010, Sneijder won the treble with Inter Milan and reached the World Cup final with the Netherlands. He wasn’t even top 3 in Ballon d’Or voting, a decision still criticized today.

Football history is full of almost moments. These stars dazzled the world, lifted trophies, and changed the game, but never got the golden ball they deserved. Who would top your Ballon d’Or snub list? Let me know in the comment section.
