Ranking The 7 Worst NFL Draft Picks Of All Time

The NFL draft is supposed to build dynasties. But when teams swing and miss at the top of the board, it can wreck entire seasons, drain fanbases, and get GMs fired.

These seven picks weren’t just disappointments, they were disasters.

7. Justin Blackmon – Talent Wasted by Off-Field Struggles

On talent alone, Blackmon was elite. But his NFL career fell apart fast due to repeated suspensions and off-field issues. He played only 20 games and never returned after 2013. For a Jaguars team desperate for offensive firepower, it was a brutal whiff.

  • Pick: 5th overall, 2012 – Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Position: WR

6. Tim Couch – Bad Luck or Bad Pick?

The Browns returned as an expansion team in 1999 and made Couch the face of the franchise. But the pressure, poor roster, and endless sacks broke him. He never developed into a franchise QB and was out of the league in five seasons.

  • Pick: 1st overall, 1999 – Cleveland Browns
  • Position: QB

5. Matt Leinart – The Hype Didn’t Translate

A Heisman winner and college superstar, Leinart was supposed to be the next big thing. Instead, he was benched for 35-year-old Kurt Warner and flamed out fast. One of the most anticlimactic pro careers in recent memory.

  • Pick: 10th overall, 2006 – Arizona Cardinals
  • Position: QB

4. Vernon Gholston – Looks Like Tarzan, Plays Like Jane

A combine monster with a sculpted frame, Gholston looked like a future Hall of Famer. But he never recorded a single sack in three seasons. Not one. The Jets gambled on upside and lost everything.

  • Pick: 6th overall, 2008 – New York Jets
  • Position: DE

3. Ryan Leaf – The Gold Standard of Busts (Until No. 1)

The Chargers picked Leaf right after Peyton Manning. While Manning became a legend, Leaf flamed out in spectacular fashion, poor play, bad attitude, and off-field meltdowns. He was out of the league in four years. One of the worst attitude-to-talent ratios ever.

  • Pick: 2nd overall, 1998 – San Diego Chargers
  • Position: QB

2. JaMarcus Russell – Millions Spent, Nothing Returned

Russell had size, arm strength, and none of the intangibles. He held out as a rookie, showed up overweight, and couldn’t read defenses. He lasted just three seasons and left behind a legacy of wasted potential and massive regret.

  • Pick: 1st overall, 2007 – Oakland Raiders
  • Position: QB

1. Add Your #1 NFL Draft Mistake

Who do you think tops this list? Drop your worst draft pick in the Comments and tell us why!

Every team believes its pick is the future. But when the hype doesn’t match the results, it’s more than a failed bet, it’s a franchise-altering mistake. These picks weren’t just bad but were historic misfires. By the way, my No. 1 pick is Trey Lance, 49ers made the biggest gamble ever with that guy.
