Gotterup Breaks Down After Career-Defining PGA Victory
Chris Gotterup couldn’t hold back his emotions after securing the biggest win of his career at the Scottish Open on Sunday. Following a tense battle with Rory McIlroy, the 25-year-old delivered a final-round 66 to finish at 15-under, two strokes clear of McIlroy and Marco Penge.
The victory was Gotterup’s second PGA Tour win, but by far his most significant earning him a coveted spot at next week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
In the post-round interview on the 18th green, CBS Sports’ Amanda Balionis asked a simple but powerful question:
“I can hear the emotion in your voice…why?”
Gotterup choked up immediately.
“Give me a sec,” he said, tears welling up. “I’m not going to be able to get it out… but everyone at home.. this is awesome. I’m not going to be able to keep it together.”
Balionis replied,
“You don’t have to. You’ve earned this moment.”

Key Birdie on 16th Changes Everything
Gotterup’s clutch birdie on the par-5 16th hole created just enough separation from McIlroy to seal the win. Balionis reminded him during the interview that he’d predicted the 16th would be a turning point.
“You mentioned last night it would be a key hole, and you delivered,” she said.
Gotterup responded,
“I thought about those interviews and said, ‘here we go.’ I just hung in there really well today.”
The former Oklahoma standout began his round with a bogey but bounced back with three birdies before the turn. While McIlroy faltered with his putter, Gotterup surged ahead, holding steady over the final stretch.
The win bumps Gotterup to center stage heading into the PGA’s next major. And as Balionis reminded him,
“You can cancel that flight you had booked to California.”
