MLB Reduces Suspension for Padres Pitcher Robert Suarez
The Los Angeles Dodgers–San Diego Padres rivalry added another fiery chapter last Thursday. And Robert Suarez is now facing the consequences. After hitting Shohei Ohtani with a 100-mph fastball in the ninth inning, Suarez was ejected and originally suspended three games by Major League Baseball.
On Wednesday, the league officially reduced the suspension to two games following Suarez’s appeal. The Padres closer will miss the final game of the series against the Nationals and Friday’s opener vs. the Reds.
A Heated NL West Rivalry Boils Over
The incident unfolded after Dodgers pitcher Jack Little hit Fernando Tatis Jr., prompting both benches to clear. Though tensions cooled briefly, Suarez delivered a clear message in the bottom of the inning when he drilled Shohei Ohtani, igniting further debate.
Managers Dave Roberts (Dodgers) and Mike Shildt (Padres) were both ejected during the chaos.
Suarez’s Strong Season Continues Despite Setback
Despite the drama, Suarez has been a steady force for San Diego’s bullpen. The 34-year-old right-hander owns a 3.51 ERA and has recorded 22 saves across 33.1 innings, allowing just one home run on the season. He also earned a save in Tuesday’s 4–3 win over the Nationals, his latest strong outing.
Suarez is in the midst of building on his career-best All-Star campaign from 2024. And remains a pivotal arm as the Padres fight for playoff positioning.
While Suarez’s two-game suspension is unlikely to derail the Padres, his absence will test the bullpen depth as the team enters a key stretch. With the Cincinnati Reds and other NL contenders looming, every inning will count.
