Bengals Cut Zack Moss After His Comeback from a Broken Neck
Just days into NFL training camp, the 27-year-old was released by the Bengals after recovering from a terrifying neck injury that ended his 2024 season. The team announced the decision Wednesday, leaving fans stunned at the timing.
Zack Moss had been placed on the non-football injury list following the diagnosis of a C6 vertebrae fracture. The injury occurred in Week 8 of the 2024 season when Moss began losing feeling in his arm. He avoided surgery and instead endured months of bedrest, barely moving his head. His comeback to the field was seen as a triumph, until now.

A Packed RB Room Leaves Moss the Odd Man Out
Moss’ release wasn’t solely injury-related. The Bengals’ running back depth became crowded in his absence. Chase Brown, a breakout 2024 rookie, earned a reputation as one of the league’s most exciting young backs. The team also drafted Tahj Brooks and re-signed Samaje Perine, limiting Moss’ opportunities.
Despite restructuring his contract down to $1.7 million for 2025, Cincinnati chose to absorb a $1.88 million dead cap hit to cut him, netting only $1.2 million in savings. The financial decision, coupled with stiff competition, made Moss expendable.

According to The Athletic, Moss even considered retirement during his recovery but ultimately decided to continue playing to support his three young children. With his NFL future uncertain, he’ll now hope another team is willing to take a chance on him.
His return was inspirational, but this next chapter will require another uphill battle.
