A New Era Begins for the Rangers
The New York Rangers have officially hired Mike Sullivan as their new head coach, just days after his exit from the Pittsburgh Penguins. General Manager Chris Drury announced the decision on Friday, calling Sullivan the “best coach to lead our team” after a swift hiring process.
Sullivan brings an impressive resume to the table. He coached the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017 and has earned a reputation as one of the top tactical minds in the NHL. His hiring signals a clear intent by the Rangers to return to playoff contention after a disappointing season under Peter Laviolette, who was let go following the team’s failure to secure a postseason spot.
“Mike brings a championship-level presence behind the bench,” said Drury, who recently signed a multiyear contract extension. “It was immediately clear he was the right choice once he became available.”

A Familiar Face Returns to New York
This isn’t Sullivan’s first stint with the Rangers. He served as an assistant coach from 2009 to 2013 under then-head coach John Tortorella, working closely with Drury during that time. The pair have remained professionally connected, most recently collaborating through USA Hockey, including at the 4 Nations Face-Off event in February.
Rangers owner James Dolan welcomed Sullivan back to the organization, saying,
“Mike’s track record and success in the NHL and internationally speaks for itself, and I look forward to seeing him behind the Rangers bench,” owner James Dolan said. “I would like to welcome Mike back to the Rangers organization.”
Sullivan, now 57, brings both experience and familiarity to Madison Square Garden. His deep ties with Drury and the U.S. national team could prove vital as the Rangers rebuild their roster and look toward international competition, including the 2026 Milan Olympics.

Will Tortorella Rejoin Sullivan?
There’s also speculation about the possible reunion between Sullivan and his longtime friend John Tortorella. Tortorella, recently dismissed by the Philadelphia Flyers, served with Sullivan at the 4 Nations tournament earlier this year. While no assistant coach hires have been confirmed, the Rangers are expected to explore staffing options in the coming days.
With Sullivan at the helm, expectations are high for a franchise that’s eager to reestablish itself among the NHL elite. The clock has started on what could be a transformative chapter for the New York Rangers. Hopefully he leaves his mark here as well
