NASCAR has officially suspended Austin Hill for one race following his dangerous retaliation move during the Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The one-race ban, announced Tuesday evening, comes under violations of Sections 4.3.A, 4.4.B, and 4.4.D of the NASCAR Member Code of Conduct.
Hill will now miss the Hyvee Perks 250 at Iowa Speedway on August 2. According to NASCAR, the penalty falls under behavioral guidelines, which address actions deemed detrimental to the sport.
Richard Childress Racing Loses Major Ground
The punishment carries significant weight for Richard Childress Racing. Due to a new waiver rule, drivers who miss a race for any reason other than injury will forfeit all accumulated playoff points for the season. Hill, currently fifth in the standings, will now enter the playoffs with zero points.
Initially, team owner Richard Childress defended his driver, saying “hell no” when asked if Hill should be banned. However, after the ruling, RCR backed down:
“Richard Childress Racing will not appeal the penalty… We remain focused on winning a championship with Austin Hill in 2025,” the team posted on X.
Austin Dillon has been named Hill’s replacement in the No. 21 Chevrolet for Iowa.

NASCAR Fans and Drivers React
The incident occurred with 10 laps to go at Indy. After Aric Almirola‘s car brushed Hill’s in Turn 3, Hill retaliated in Turn 4 by hooking Almirola’s right rear, sending him head-on into the wall. Almirola described the hit as “definitely intentional.”
NASCAR fans had strong reactions online. One comment read:
“He deserved more. I’d give him the remaining three races off… Imagine if Almirola left in an ambulance?”
Another wrote:
“Tempers in racing are normal, but not deliberate wrecking. This was crossing the line.”
Do you think NASCAR was too lenient, or just right? Let me know in the comments.
