Austin Hill just got a green light for the playoffs, but it comes at a steep cost.
After missing the Iowa race due to a suspension, NASCAR has officially granted Hill a waiver, preserving his playoff eligibility for the Xfinity Series. However, Hill won’t be carrying his 21 hard-earned playoff points, which ranked third among all drivers, into the postseason.
The waiver follows Hill’s controversial move at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he intentionally right-rear hooked Aric Almirola with just 10 laps to go. NASCAR initially hit Hill with a five-lap penalty but followed up with a suspension that sidelined him from the next race.

Under NASCAR’s updated rules, suspensions come with a brutal playoff penalty: zero bonus points. That means not only is Hill’s previous total wiped out, but any playoff points he earns through the regular-season finale on September 6 won’t count.
It’s a crushing blow to Hill’s championship hopes. He has three wins this season and currently sits fifth in points, but without playoff bonuses, his chances of advancing through each round are slimmer than ever.

Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic weighed in on Dirty Mo Media, calling the penalty “justified.”
“It’s gonna be tough for Austin Hill in the playoffs… but this was a deserved penalty. NASCAR got this one right,” Bianchi said. “Bonus points are huge, and he’s not going to have those to fall back on. This changes everything.”
While Austin Hill still has a path to the Championship 4, he’ll need to fight harder than ever. NASCAR’s message is loud and clear: retaliation has consequences, and no driver is immune.
