Ranking the 10 Most Overrated MLB Teams of the Last 20 Years

Not every team that gets hyped up actually delivers. Some squads enter the season with sky-high expectations, only to trip over their own shoelaces when it matters most. Others are just perennially overrated, living off nostalgia or big-market bias.

Here’s a look at the ten most overrated MLB teams of the last 20 years—teams that talked a big game but, for one reason or another, didn’t back it up.

1. 2023 New York Mets

Remember when Steve Cohen opened up his checkbook and tried to buy a championship? That went well. The Mets entered 2023 with the highest payroll in MLB history, featuring Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and a supposed super team. Instead, they flopped so hard they held a midseason fire sale. The only thing elite about this squad was how efficiently they disappointed their fanbase.

2. 2011 Boston Red Sox

Openverse

“The best team ever assembled”—that’s what people were calling the 2011 Red Sox before they played a single game. Then they collapsed in September, completing one of the most embarrassing choke jobs in baseball history. The fried chicken and beer in the clubhouse were more effective than the pitching staff.

3. 2015 Washington Nationals

Openverse

This was supposed to be the year. The Nationals had Bryce Harper in MVP form, Max Scherzer dealing, and a loaded lineup. Instead, they finished second in the NL East, fired their manager, and had Jonathan Papelbon try to strangle Harper in the dugout. Just a magical season all around.

4. 2019 Philadelphia Phillies

Openverse

After signing Bryce Harper to a $330 million deal, the Phillies were crowned NL East favorites. Then they went out and finished fourth in the division. The Harper-led revolution would have to wait, as the pitching staff was held together with duct tape and good intentions.

5. 2004 New York Yankees

The Bronx Bombers were supposed to steamroll their way to another championship, especially after taking a 3-0 lead against the Red Sox in the ALCS. Then, they let Boston complete the most infamous comeback in sports history. Not only did they lose, but they became an eternal meme in the process.

6. 2012 Los Angeles Angels

Albert Pujols. Mike Trout. C.J. Wilson. Surely, this team would dominate, right? Wrong. The Angels missed the playoffs entirely, proving once again that having a bloated payroll doesn’t guarantee success—especially when your pitching is mediocre at best.

7. 2008 Detroit Tigers

Detroit loaded up in the offseason, adding Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis, and were expected to be a juggernaut. Instead, they finished dead last in the AL Central. Turns out, assembling a team like it’s a video game doesn’t always work in real life.

8. 2017 Toronto Blue Jays

After back-to-back ALCS appearances, Toronto was expected to be a contender again in 2017. Instead, they limped to a 76-86 record, proving that sometimes, the window slams shut a lot faster than expected.

The Padres entered 2021 as the trendy World Series pick, with their “Slam Diego” offense and stacked rotation. Then they imploded down the stretch, missing the playoffs entirely. The highlight of their season? A viral video of Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado arguing in the dugout.

10. 2013 Los Angeles Dodgers

This was supposed to be the Dodgers’ year. They had an insane payroll, a dominant rotation, and that legendary 42-8 midseason stretch. But when October came around, they lost to the Cardinals in the NLCS. All that hype for…nothing.
