Marlins Definitely Ripped Off Yankees in Blockbuster Trade

Last season’s blockbuster trade between the Miami Marlins and New York Yankees, which sent Jazz Chisholm to the Bronx, is beginning to look one-sided, and not in the Yankees’ favor. While Chisholm brought flash and power to New York, the Marlins may have landed a future star in Agustin Ramirez, along with two other promising prospects.

Agustin Ramirez Shows Early Star Potential

Ramirez, one of three players sent to Miami in the trade, was called up in late April and wasted no time flashing his raw power. In limited action, the 23-year-old catcher already has:

  • 8 home runs
  • 11 doubles
  • A .456 slugging percentage despite a modest .238 batting average

While the slash line of .238/.295/.456 may seem average, scouts and analysts see his elite power potential as a difference-maker. Ramirez entered 2025 as the No. 55 prospect in MLB, and it’s easy to see why after his 25-homer, 93-RBI performance in the minors last year.

Marlins: Two More Names to Watch

The Marlins didn’t just get Ramirez. They also acquired infielders Jared Serna and Abrahan Ramirez, both of whom bring plenty of intrigue. Abrahan Ramirez in particular is turning heads:

  • Just 20 years old
  • Minor league slash line of .305/.428/.417
  • An impressive .377 OBP in Triple-A Jupiter this season

While his power numbers are modest, his plate discipline and advanced approach at the plate hint at long-term success.

Was Jazz Chisholm Worth It?

Chisholm’s numbers in 2024 were solid at first glance, .273/.325/.500 with 11 homers and 23 RBI in 191 plate appearances. But since returning from an oblique injury, he’s been slashing just .214/.318/.452, and his lifetime OPS of .758 suggests his ceiling might be lower than once hoped.

At 27 years old, Chisholm is likely what he is — a streaky hitter with pop, but perhaps not the franchise-altering star the Yankees were hoping for.

Verdict: Advantage, Marlins

With Agustin Ramirez already producing at the big-league level and two more prospects showing long-term promise, this trade could be a massive win for Miami. While Chisholm brings value to New York, the Yankees may have mortgaged too much future talent for a player who hasn’t quite broken out.

This one’s far from over, but the early returns heavily favor the Marlins.
