Cubs Legend Kyle Hendricks Notches 100th Career Win with Angels

Kyle Hendricks, once the steady ace of the Chicago Cubs, hit a major career milestone Friday night. Earning his 100th career win in a victory with the Los Angeles Angels over the Seattle Mariners. The milestone places him among an elite group as just the 19th active pitcher in MLB to achieve the feat.

While no longer donning Cubbie blue, Hendricks remains a beloved figure in Chicago, remembered for his cool demeanor, precision pitching, and massive contributions to the Cubs’ 2016 World Series title.

A Milestone with His Hometown Team

After spending 11 seasons with the Cubs, Hendricks entered free agency this past offseason and signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Angels, his hometown team. Though the Cubs could have used some pitching depth amid their current injury woes, the split was likely for the best. Hendricks needed a new setting, and he’s making the most of it.

Despite a 3-6 record and a 5.40 ERA, his expected ERA (4.15) suggests he’s pitched better than the numbers show. He’s struggled with strikeouts, ranking in the 4th percentile in strikeout rate and 1st percentile in whiff rate, per Baseball Savant. Still, his low average exit velocity and modest walk rate show flashes of the control that once made him elite.

Legacy in Chicago Cubs

Nicknamed “The Professor,” Hendricks was a cerebral force in the Cubs rotation, known for finesse over power. Over 1,580.1 innings in Chicago, he compiled a 3.68 ERA, 1,259 strikeouts, and only 364 walks. He also tossed six complete games, including four shutouts, and twice finished in the top 10 for NL Cy Young voting.

His 2016 campaign stands out, with a third-place Cy Young finish as the Cubs broke a 108-year World Series drought. Alongside stars like Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Jon Lester, Hendricks was crucial in making history.

A Meaningful Cybs Milestone

Reaching 100 career wins in today’s game is a big deal, fewer pitchers are even given the opportunity. For Hendricks, doing it with the Angels, where it all began for him, adds emotional weight.

While his best days may be behind him, Hendricks remains a respected veteran. And whether in Chicago or Los Angeles, he’s etched his name into MLB history.
