John McEnroe Upset Many With Awful Rafael Nadal Take at Roland Garros

The 2025 French Open delivered thrilling finals on both sides of the draw, but John McEnroe‘s post-match commentary about Rafael Nadal has tennis fans seeing red.

Alcaraz and Sinner Shine, Nadal’s Legacy Questioned

While Carlos Alcaraz edged out Jannik Sinner in an epic five-set men’s final and Coco Gauff stunned Aryna Sabalenka to claim the women’s title, McEnroe sparked outrage during Sunday’s broadcast. The former world No. 1 suggested that in their current form, both Alcaraz and Sinner could beat a prime Rafael Nadal on clay.

“If they’re bringing their A-game right now, you could make a serious argument that they’d be favored to beat Nadal at his best on clay,” McEnroe claimed.

Fans Call Out Disrespect to the King of Clay

Nadal, who officially retired in 2024, is widely regarded as the greatest clay-court player of all time, with a record 14 French Open titles and 63 clay-court championships. Unsurprisingly, fans didn’t take kindly to McEnroe’s hot take.

Social media quickly erupted:

  • “Peak Nadal… on clay… the underdog? Take the mic away from this unc fgs,” one fan wrote.
  • “Absolutely deluded,” said another.
  • “McEnroe just disqualified himself with that comment,” a user added.

Even fans of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer found themselves rallying to defend Nadal’s unmatched legacy on clay.

Is It Just Recency Bias?

There’s no doubt that Alcaraz and Sinner are redefining modern tennis. Alcaraz, in particular, has now won back-to-back French Open titles and is seen as Nadal’s natural successor on clay.

But critics argue McEnroe’s comment reeks of recency bias. Overlooking the decade-plus dominance Nadal displayed on red dirt, including winning 112 of his 115 matches at Roland Garros.

While McEnroe is no stranger to bold opinions, this one may have crossed a line for many tennis fans who view Nadal’s legacy as untouchable, especially on the court where he earned the title King of Clay.

McEnroe’s take may have been intended to praise the current stars of men’s tennis. But it unintentionally downplayed Rafa’s once-in-a-generation greatness. Whether one agrees or not, the uproar proves that even in retirement, Rafael Nadal remains the gold standard of clay-court tennis.
