Clara Adams, a 16-year-old track phenom from North Salinas High School, is considering legal action after being stripped of her state championship title due to a post-race celebration deemed “unsportsmanlike” by California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) officials.
After winning the 400-meter final at the California state high school championships on May 30, Adams celebrated by spraying her shoes with a fire extinguisher. A nod to a legendary 2004 celebration by former Olympic star Maurice Greene.
Instead of praise, officials disqualified her and banned her from the 200-meter race later that day.
Family Blasts CIF for Harsh Punishment
Adams and her father, David Adams, who also coaches her, are now threatening legal action if the title is not reinstated. Their attorney, Adante Pointer, told PEOPLE:
“CIF did not follow their own rules… Clara was robbed of the state title without proper justification. However, this may cost her scholarships, NIL deals, and has caused emotional distress.”
David admitted he broke a rule by rushing the field to reach his daughter. But claimed he did so out of concern after seeing an official physically grab and yell at Clara. Clara confirmed that she was left “shocked” by how aggressively officials treated her in the moment.
Maurice Greene Supports Clara
Even Maurice Greene, the inspiration behind the celebration, weighed in. He told KSBW-TV:
“If it was away from everyone and not interfering with anyone, I would say reinstate her.”
Clara and her dad said they decided on the homage after watching Greene’s old footage just days before the meet. And made sure the celebration didn’t interfere with other runners.
The CIF has not released a formal statement. However, public opinion is rallying behind Clara, with many calling the punishment excessive and outdated.
As Clara Adams explores legal options, the case is raising major questions about fairness, tradition, and how far celebratory expression should be allowed in high school sports.
