13 Golfers Who Weren’t Afraid to Burn Bridges With Sponsors, Tours, or Fans

Golf may have a reputation for being a gentleman’s game, but not every player follows that script. While some prefer to stay in the good graces of fans, sponsors, and the powers that be, others have taken a match to those bridges without a second thought.

Whether it was ditching a major tour, clashing with officials, or saying the quiet part out loud, these golfers didn’t mind stirring the pot. Love them or hate them, they played by their own rules—and left plenty of smoke in their wake.

Sergio’s temper has always been part of the package, and it’s cost him more than a few fans over the years. From club-smashing antics to storming off interviews, he’s never been too concerned with keeping everyone happy.

Reed has made headlines for all the wrong reasons, from rule controversies to family drama. He’s leaned into the villain role and hasn’t exactly been eager to smooth things over with critics.

Wie wasn’t afraid to break tradition, from playing with the men to challenging outdated norms in the sport. While she inspired many, she also caught backlash from golf’s old guard—and never backed down.

Bubba’s quirky personality and on-course outbursts haven’t always sat well with fans or fellow players. Despite the backlash, he’s stayed unapologetically himself the entire time.

9. Greg Norman

Norman’s role in the rise of LIV Golf made him a polarizing figure overnight. He went from golf legend to disruptor, burning bridges with the PGA Tour and then some.

Sabbatini has long been one of the more divisive players in the game, known for his feisty attitude and awkward feuds. He’s not exactly the type to play politics with tour officials or fellow pros.

7. John Daly

Daly’s entire career has been one giant middle finger to the golf establishment. Sponsors didn’t always love the drinking, smoking, and gambling—but fans sure did.

Lexi has never been afraid to speak her mind when it comes to tour rulings or criticism. She’s had her fair share of run-ins with officials and has made it clear she’s not here to be quiet or polite.

5. Ian Poulter

Poulter’s fashion sense wasn’t the only thing bold about him—he took shots at the PGA Tour and embraced LIV without flinching. His brash confidence hasn’t always landed well, but he’s never cared.

Brooks built his brand on not caring what anyone thought, and that included sponsors and media. His move to LIV was just another example of him doing things his way, no apologies.

3. Paige Spiranac

Though not a traditional pro, Paige ruffled plenty of feathers in golf’s conservative circles. She challenged the sport’s image and caught heat from critics who couldn’t handle her approach—and she doubled down every time.
