Quarterback may be the most important position in football, but even the best can’t do it all alone. Without a solid offensive line, reliable receivers, or even a decent defense, some talented QBs were stuck playing uphill their entire careers.
These guys had the arm, the skill, and the leadership—but they were often surrounded by dropped passes, missed blocks, and defensive meltdowns. Here are 10 former NFL quarterbacks who definitely deserved a better supporting cast.
10. Jake Plummer

Plummer was a gutsy playmaker who kept his teams in games they had no business winning. He never quite had a complete roster around him, and it showed in the win column.
9. Joey Harrington

Thrown into the fire in Detroit, Harrington had the tools but no help. His career was derailed by shaky coaching, poor protection, and not much talent around him.
8. Steve Beuerlein

He bounced around several teams and had one incredible season in Carolina, but was mostly left to fend for himself. Beuerlein could sling it—he just needed more weapons and consistency around him.
7. Kyle Orton

Orton was never flashy, but he played smart football and kept his teams competitive. Unfortunately, he rarely had elite receivers or a defense that could hold a lead.
6. Archie Manning

Long before his sons were winning Super Bowls, Archie was getting crushed behind a porous Saints line. He had the talent, but New Orleans didn’t give him much else to work with.
5. David Carr

The poster child for being thrown into a bad situation, Carr was sacked into oblivion in Houston. Who knows what he could have been with a real offensive line?
4. Vinny Testaverde

He played forever, but often on teams that weren’t built to contend. Despite all the chaos, Vinny still managed to put up numbers and hang tough.
3. Jeff Blake

Blake had one of the prettiest deep balls of the ‘90s, but little support to match. If he had a full roster behind him, his career might have looked a whole lot different.
2. Carson Palmer

He had moments with solid teams, but injuries and lackluster support often held him back. Palmer’s talent was never the issue—his situation usually was.
