Fever Urged to Trade Sophie Cunningham in Bold Deadline Move

Sophie Cunningham Trade Talks Heat Up as Deadline Approaches

The Indiana Fever are at a critical crossroads. With the WNBA trade deadline fast approaching, some analysts believe the team needs to make a tough call involving Sophie Cunningham, one of their most reliable and popular players. Parker Johnson of Athlon Sports pitched a scenario where Cunningham is traded to the Los Angeles Sparks in exchange for Azura Stevens.

Cunningham is averaging 8.0 points and 3.9 rebounds per game while hitting 41.6% from beyond the arc. She’s been a spark plug for the Fever, earning the nickname “firecracker” from Natasha Howard after a 17-point outing against Seattle.

Despite her impact, the Fever are being told to do “whatever it takes” to support Caitlin Clark and chase a championship. That may include parting ways with a fan favorite.

Blockbuster Proposal Involving Azura Stevens

The hypothetical deal would send Sophie Cunningham, Damiris Dantas, and a 2026 first-round pick to Los Angeles. In return, Indiana would land Azura Stevens — a 6-foot-6 sharpshooter averaging 14.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and shooting 40.5% from deep.

Stevens’ versatility on both ends of the court would make her a dream fit alongside Clark. She would add interior scoring, rim protection, and elite spacing, key elements the Fever need to contend with powerhouses like the Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty.

For the Sparks, Sophie Cunningham brings toughness, defense, and leadership. She also has significant off-court value as one of the most marketable players in the WNBA.

Would This Trade Be Worth It

Trading Cunningham wouldn’t be easy for Fever fans to stomach. However, this deal checks multiple boxes:

  • Frontcourt depth
  • Reliable fourth scoring option
  • Elite spacing for Clark’s return

With teams like the Lynx, Liberty, and Storm already making moves, Indiana may need to act fast to stay in the title conversation. The decision could shape the franchise’s immediate future and potentially secure its first WNBA championship.
