Fever Coach Voices Defensive Concern for Caitlin Clark After Valkyries Loss

Even with Caitlin Clark back in the lineup, the Indiana Fever couldn’t avoid a second straight loss, falling 80-61 to Kayla Thornton and the Golden State Valkyries. Clark returned Wednesday afternoon after missing five games with a groin injury, but her comeback raised a few red flags for Fever head coach Stephanie White.

Clark finished with 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting, five rebounds, and six assists. But it wasn’t her offense that had White worried, it was her defense.

“I was a little bit concerned defensively, but I thought she looked good at times,” White said after the game. “Maybe I’m naive, I don’t worry about Caitlin Clark getting into the flow offensively. But when we reintegrate her, how do we continue to keep our ball movement?”

Clark’s return comes at a pivotal time. The Fever are in the midst of a five-game homestand and now sit at 9-10 on the season. Notably, they’ve gone 5-5 with Clark and 5-5 without her, a stat that’s sure to add fuel to ongoing conversations about her overall impact.

Caitlin Clark: A Lingering Injury Storyline

This was Clark’s second five-game absence of the season. She previously missed time in May with a quad injury and went down again on June 24 against the Seattle Storm. Although she looked active and aggressive early, especially on the Fever’s first play, there were visible signs she’s still getting her rhythm back.

Meanwhile, Valkyries forward Kayla Thornton showed no mercy, pouring in 18 points and grabbing eight boards in a standout performance. The Fever couldn’t keep up, and it showed in nearly every phase of the game.

Indiana will have a brief break before taking on Brittney Griner and the Atlanta Dream on Friday night. All eyes will be on how Clark responds both physically and defensively as the Fever try to rebound.
