ESPN Analyst Defends Shedeur Sanders Amid ‘Set Up to Fail’ Claims

Dan Orlovsky Defends Shedeur Sanders

Shedeur Sanders is getting his shot with the Cleveland Browns in the preseason opener. But not everyone believes it’s a fair one. While some critics argue that the rookie QB is being “set up to fail,” Dan Orlovsky isn’t having it.

The former Colorado standout fell to the fifth round in the 2025 NFL Draft, surprising many who expected him to go earlier. Now part of a crowded Browns quarterback room with Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Snoop Huntley. Sanders has a chance to prove himself early.

Still, questions have been raised about the number of reps he’s received in training camp. Analysts like Robert Griffin III and Louis Riddick have publicly voiced concern, claiming Cleveland may not be giving Sanders a level playing field.

Orlovsky pushed back hard against that idea. In a video posted to social media, the ESPN analyst said, “Can we stop with this ‘Shedeur Sanders is being set up to fail’ narrative?” He pointed out that Flacco likely won’t start in Week 1 of preseason due to his veteran status.

Meanwhile, Pickett and Gabriel are dealing with hamstring issues and haven’t practiced much. That leaves Sanders and Huntley, and only one of them has been in camp long enough to take the field.

“Shedeur has been there,” Orlovsky noted. “It may not be ideal, but very rarely is it for a fifth-round pick. It’s an opportunity.”

The situation isn’t perfect, but Sanders now has a real shot to show what he can do. If he performs like he has in practice, he may just shake up Cleveland’s quarterback depth chart, and silence the doubters in the process.
