Did the NBA Rig the Draft Lottery?

The NBA world exploded on social media Monday night after the Dallas Mavericks defied all odds and landed the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. With just a 1.8% chance of winning the lottery, the Mavs pulled off the biggest jump in draft history, moving up from the projected No. 11 spot to the top.

Normally, a jump like this would be celebrated. But this time, the internet wasn’t buying it.

Luka Doncic To Lakers Trade Fuels NBA Conspiracy Theories

What’s fueling all the noise? Just months ago, the Mavericks shocked the league by trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in what many called the most controversial trade in recent NBA memory. The backlash from fans was swift and severe… how could the Mavs give up a generational talent?

Now, the outrage has cooled, and conspiracy-minded fans say they know why.

According to posts circulating across X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Reddit, the NBA “rewarded” the Mavericks for sending Doncic to a marquee franchise like the Lakers. The theory? The league wanted its biggest star in a big market, and handed Dallas a consolation prize in the form of the No. 1 pick.

Is It Just Coincidence?

While the odds were long, the NBA Draft Lottery has produced surprise winners before. But this particular scenario, trading a superstar and immediately winning the No. 1 pick feels too perfect for some fans to accept at face value.

The NBA, of course, maintains that the lottery is completely random and secure. Still, the timing has many fans raising eyebrows and calling foul.

Whether it’s just dumb luck or something more, one thing is clear: The Dallas Mavericks are back in the spotlight. And this time, it’s not for trading Luka Doncic, but for what might become the next big chapter in their franchise’s history.
