Cubs Shock Fans With Surprise Pitcher Call-Up from Iowa
The Cubs’ quiet trade deadline had already left fans frustrated, and now, their pitching depth is being tested faster than expected.
Just days after acquiring Michael Soroka, the right-hander exited his start against the Cincinnati Reds early due to shoulder discomfort. Manager Craig Counsell confirmed Soroka is heading to the 15-day injured list.
With the rotation taking a hit, Chicago needed reinforcements quickly. That’s when a surprising face showed up at Wrigley Field: Nate Pearson.
Pearson was photographed arriving in Chicago ahead of Wednesday’s game. While the Cubs hadn’t made anything official at the time, Marquee Sports Network later confirmed that Pearson was recalled from Triple-A Iowa, replacing Soroka on the roster.

The 27-year-old reliever has had a shaky ride this season. In the majors, Pearson has a rough 12.66 ERA over 10.2 innings. But in Triple-A Iowa, he’s been far more effective, posting a 3-2 record with a 2.27 ERA in 35.2 innings. The Cubs are clearly banking on that minor-league form translating to big-league consistency.
This unexpected roster move signals just how reliant the Cubs will now be on their bullpen. With Soroka down and no major starting pitcher added at the deadline, the team must piece things together on the mound. Ben Brown helped hold things together Tuesday, pitching four solid innings after Soroka’s early exit.

Still trailing the Brewers by three games in the NL Central. And clinging to a narrow Wild Card lead, the Cubs face mounting pressure. Their offense will need to click again, and arms like Pearson’s will have to step up if Chicago hopes to stay in the playoff hunt.
