Chicago Sky’s Struggles Continue, and Angel Reese Is a Big Part of the Cause

The Chicago Sky entered the 2025 WNBA season with high hopes, bolstered by offseason moves and young stars. But seven games in, they’re just 2-5 and near the bottom of the standings, and a lot of that has to do with Angel Reese.

Reese, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 draft, became a national name during her time at LSU. She’s tried to ride that fame into the WNBA spotlight, even drawing comparisons between her stardom and that of Caitlin Clark. On the court, though, the gap has been glaring.

Angel Reese From Star Power to Stat Trouble

Reese averaged a respectable double-double as a rookie (13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds), but shooting woes followed her into year two. In 2025, her scoring has dipped to 9.3 points per game, and she’s shooting a brutal 30.9% from the field, with only 30.8% on two-point attempts.

Despite averaging 5.6 offensive rebounds per game, her efficiency has cratered. Often, she’s rebounding her own misses, a troubling stat for a forward expected to anchor the Sky’s frontcourt.

Cardoso, Vandersloot, and Missed Expectations

Kamilla Cardoso, the No. 3 pick in the same draft, hasn’t made the expected second-year leap either. While her scoring is slightly up (10.9 ppg), her rebounding and blocks are down, and she’s playing fewer minutes.

The Sky had playoff aspirations after trading for Courtney Vandersloot and Ariel Atkins, but a season-ending ACL injury to Vandersloot has left a major hole in playmaking. Atkins has been solid, leading the team with 13.7 points per game and shooting 40% from deep, but her defense hasn’t lifted the team out of its slump.

Tough Road Ahead

Statistically, the Sky are in freefall:

  • 11th out of 13 teams in record (2-5)
  • 12th in point differential (-12.7)
  • 12th in offensive and defensive rating

No one doubts Reese’s talent on the glass. But if she wants to be mentioned alongside Clark and the WNBA’s elite, she needs to become a more complete player. Right now, she’s one of the least efficient scorers in the league, and the Sky are suffering because of it.

Angel Reese isn’t the Chicago Sky’s only issue. But she’s certainly not the answer right now.
