Angel Reese may have posted an impressive stat line, but Chicago Sky fans weren’t buying the team’s decision to name her Player of the Game after another rough loss Tuesday night.
Facing the undefeated New York Liberty for the second time this season, the Sky were handed their sixth double-digit loss, falling 85–66 and dropping to 2–6 on the season. Reese, however, was a bright spot on the stat sheet, scoring 17 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and adding three assists and two steals while shooting 8-for-13 from the field.
Despite the loss, the Sky took to social media to celebrate her performance, posting:
“double-double from A5 in the BIG [apple] tonight.”
Fans Slam the Timing
The post didn’t go over well with fans. Many questioned the Chicago Sky on why a “Player of the Game” was being named after such a lopsided defeat. Comments ranged from sarcastic to bluntly critical:
- You guys are posting a player of the game in a lost game… the equivalent of a participation trophy.”
- “Oh look! Another BLOWOUT LOSING GAME! But fear not folks, at least she got a double double lol.”
- “Doesn’t matter when you’re getting blown out as badly as you are every game.”
- “So what!!!! She was still negative while on the floor and you got blown out again.”
“Loser [explicit] smh.”
Chicago Sky Injuries and Lineup Changes
The Chicago Sky were already facing adversity after veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot was ruled out for the season with a torn ACL. In response, head coach Tyler Marsh shuffled the lineup, inserting Rebecca Allen and Rachel Banham into the starting five and moving Kia Nurse to the bench. The changes, however, didn’t produce immediate results.

While Reese continues to develop in her sophomore WNBA season, the team around her is clearly struggling to find consistency. And the backlash suggests fans want more accountability and fewer participation-style honors.
Angel Reese has shown flashes of stardom, but for the Chicago Sky to silence critics, individual stats won’t be enough. Chicago needs wins, and fast.
