Angel Reese may already be a rising star in the WNBA, but according to Candace Parker, there’s still work to be done, and she’s not sugarcoating it.
Reese, the standout rookie forward for the Chicago Sky, has quickly made a name for herself as a dominant rebounder. She even set a WNBA rookie record with 446 rebounds, and she continues to be a force on the glass. But while her rebounding and defensive energy have stood out, her offensive game still needs refinement.
Following the Sky’s 79-52 loss to the Indiana Fever on Saturday, Angel Reese now has more career rebounds than points, a stat that highlights where her development needs to go next. However, WNBA legend Candace Parker isn’t calling on Reese to start jacking up threes or expanding her game in every direction.
Parker’s Tough Love: “What Is Angel Reese’s Spot?”
In a recent interview with Jemele Hill on Spolitics, Parker delivered some candid advice.
“For me, I think the improvement comes from figuring out what you’re gonna be great at,” said Parker. “We already know she’s gonna be a great rebounder, but I think it’s really mastering like what spots.”
Parker emphasized that it’s not about trying to do everything. She warned against the temptation to become overly versatile too quickly, suggesting instead that Angel Reese focus on developing a go-to move or location, her signature spot on the court.
To illustrate, Parker pointed to Chelsea Gray of the Las Vegas Aces, who consistently gets to the right elbow and makes plays from there.
“My thing is what is Angel Reese’s spot?” Parker asked. “And what is her go-to?
Reese is Working Through Contact
From practice footage, it’s clear Angel Reese is currently working on scoring through contact, especially after securing offensive rebounds. That’s a good sign, considering many of her scoring opportunities come on second-chance efforts.
So far this season, she’s averaging 9.1 points and 12.3 rebounds per game, shooting 38% from the field. That shooting percentage highlights the need for cleaner finishes and more confident scoring from inside.
Angel Reese’s potential is undeniable. If she follows Parker’s advice and hones in on one offensive weapon or sweet spot, she could elevate her game to All-Star level.
Fans can catch Reese and the Sky back in action Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. ET against the New York Liberty on ESPN.
