Calls Mount for WNBA to Take Further Action After Caitlin Clark Clash

Clark Gets Jabbed, Shoved in WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Battle

The Indiana Fever vs. Connecticut Sun matchup on Tuesday night felt more like a playoff war than a mid-season clash. And once again, Caitlin Clark found herself at the center of controversy.

The second quarter saw Clark entangled in a tense moment with Jacy Sheldon and Marina Mabrey, but things really escalated midway through the third. As Clark attempted to create space, Sheldon jabbed her in the eye. A stunned Clark responded with a shove, only to be blindside shoved to the ground by Mabrey seconds later.

The refs hit Sheldon with a flagrant-1, while Clark and Mabrey were each slapped with technical fouls. But for many WNBA fans, those calls didn’t go far enough.

Punishment Doesn’t Match the Play

Under current WNBA rules, players are fined for each technical foul—but even Clark, who was on the receiving end of the hits, now owes $400 in tech fines this season. Mabrey, meanwhile, earned her second tech of the year but faces no additional discipline as of now.

Fans are now urging the league to act:

  • Suspensions for repeat offenders
  • Fines equal to 10% of salary for flagrant fouls
  • Accountability from WNBA officiating crews

A League at a Crossroads

Caitlin Clark continues to be the most watched and talked-about player in the WNBA. But repeated physical play against her, met with lenient consequences, is becoming a league-wide concern.

“#WNBA Jacy Sheldon and Marina Mabrey, you are thugs. Trash behavior… This has no place in the league,” one fan tweeted.

“SUSPEND MARINA MABREY,” another demanded.

“They should suspend Mabrey for the rest of the season tbh.”

The question now: Will the WNBA protect its biggest star, or allow this rough trend to continue?
