Andy Reid Steps In to Break Up Fight at Chiefs Training Camp

The Kansas City Chiefs‘ training camp got heated on Tuesday when two rookies exchanged punches during a full-contact drill, prompting Andy Reid himself to step in and restore order.

The brief fight broke out during a 9-on-7 drill when offensive tackle Josh Simmons took offense to a shove from defensive end Ashton Gillotte after a play had already ended. Gillotte had grabbed Simmons’s jersey and pushed him, leading Simmons to retaliate by throwing a punch. Gillotte fired back with one of his own, and the two briefly scuffled before teammates stepped in to separate them.

Coach Reid wasn’t far behind. The veteran head coach quickly intervened, causing both players to back off as he appeared to speak to Simmons directly before the team resumed practice.

Clips of the incident quickly circulated online, drawing buzz among fans just days into camp.

While fights like these aren’t unusual during early camp sessions — when players are ramping up physicality and competing for spots — tensions clearly boiled over in this case. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and practice carried on as normal.

Simmons, a standout from Ohio State, was Chiefs first-round pick at No. 32 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. Gillotte, a defensive lineman out of Louisville, was selected in the third round at No. 66. Both are expected to compete for significant roles this season for the Chiefs. And Tuesday’s altercation may just be a byproduct of rookie intensity and high expectations.
