16 NFL Duos That Were All Hype and No Chemistry

In the NFL, pairing big names together is supposed to be a recipe for success. But sometimes, star power can’t overcome a total lack of chemistry, on or off the field.

From quarterbacks and wide receivers who never got on the same page to coaching tandems that fizzled fast, these duos looked great in headlines but left fans scratching their heads on Sundays. Hype doesn’t win games—cohesion does.

16. Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall (Chicago Bears)

Reunited in Chicago after their Denver days, this duo promised fireworks. Instead, fans got miscommunication and sideline drama.

15. Odell Beckham Jr. and Baker Mayfield (Cleveland Browns)

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) heads to the huddle with running back Kareem Hunt (27) and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (13) in the second quarter at U.S. Bank Stadium.

They were supposed to light up the scoreboard. Instead, they just lit up Twitter with rumors and frustration.

14. Carson Wentz and Frank Reich (Indianapolis Colts)

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich talks with Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz (2) on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, during a game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Reich was supposed to fix Wentz. It turns out that not even his former coach could salvage that situation.

13. Randy Moss and Kerry Collins (Oakland Raiders)

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver (84) Randy Moss runs for a third quarter touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium. The 49ers defeated the Cardinals 24-3.

Moss in silver and black sounded like a dream. Too bad the quarterback situation was more of a nightmare.

12. Chip Kelly and LeSean McCoy (Philadelphia Eagles)

Bills running back LeSean McCoy rushed for 156 yards on 32 carries in a 13-7 Bills win over the Colts in overtime in Orchard Park Dec. 10, 2017.

Speed, tempo, and talent were all there on paper. However, their relationship soured quickly, and the consequences followed.

11. Josh Allen and Kelvin Benjamin (Buffalo Bills)

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (17) celebrates his touchdown with offensive tackle Dion Dawkins (73) and wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin (13) during the second half against the Jacksonville Jaguars at New Era Field.

Buffalo hoped Benjamin would be Allen’s big target. Instead, he looked checked out from the jump.

10. Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes (New York Jets)

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez (6) wide receiver Santonio Holmes (10) celebrate after a touchdown during the first half. The play was overturned by a penalty.

The Jets tried to pair a young QB with a Super Bowl-winning wideout. It didn’t take long for the finger-pointing to start.

9. Jimmy Garoppolo and Josh McDaniels (Las Vegas Raiders)

Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks Stetson Bennett (13) Jimmy Garoppolo (11) and Matt Stafford (9) participate in offensive drills during organized team activities at Rams Practice Facility.

They had history in New England, but Vegas wasn’t the place for a reunion tour. Injuries, turnovers, and a whole lot of losing followed.

8. Matt Patricia and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions)

Patricia came in like a rocket scientist with answers. Stafford just looked more and more miserable with each passing game.

7. Donovan McNabb and Mike Shanahan (Washington)

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan (center) watches his team warm up before a preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

A future Hall of Fame coach and a six-time Pro Bowler seemed like a solid match. The reality was a midseason benching and a whole lot of awkward.

6. Trevor Lawrence and Urban Meyer (Jacksonville Jaguars)

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence (16) looks to pass during the first organized team activity at Miller Electric Center Monday, May 19, 2025 in Jacksonville, Fla.
Corey Perrine / Imagn Images

This was supposed to be the start of something special. Instead, it was a masterclass in dysfunction.

5. Derek Carr and Davante Adams (Las Vegas Raiders)

Packers wide receiver Davante Adams appears poised to make a big jump in year two after a solid rookie campaign.
Wm. Glasheen / Imagn Images

They were college teammates and best friends. But in the NFL, the magic didn’t carry over.

4. Brett Favre and Brad Childress (Minnesota Vikings)

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre is able to get off a pass despite being dragged by Detroit Lions Luther Ellis during the second quarter of their game on Dec. 10, 2000 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis

Their first season brought promise. Year two brought miscommunication, injuries, and a dramatic collapse.

3. Tony Romo and Roy Williams (Dallas Cowboys)

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Troy Williamson (84) celebrates a fourth quarter touchdown during the Jaguars 24-3 win over the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field

Dallas paid big to bring Roy in from Detroit. He just never quite fit into Romo’s rhythm.

2. Russell Wilson and Nathaniel Hackett (Denver Broncos)

This was supposed to be a fresh start for both guys. Instead, it was one of the messiest seasons in recent memory.

1. Tom Brady and Antonio Brown (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (12) throws a touchdown pass over the Tennessee Titans defense at LP Field in Nashville on Sept. 9, 2012. The Titans lost their home and season opener 34-13

They won a Super Bowl together, sure. But the off-field chaos and abrupt endings made this duo more infamous than iconic.
