PGA Tour Stars Weigh in After Rory McIlroy Skips FedEx Event

McIlroy’s Move Sparks Reactions Across the PGA Tour

The PGA Tour is facing renewed scrutiny after Rory McIlroy’s surprise decision to skip this week’s FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis. The event marks the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, but McIlroy’s absence won’t affect his chances of claiming a fourth title. He currently sits securely in second place in the standings.

Despite the move being allowed under the playoff format, many fans and players saw it as controversial. McIlroy had previously hinted at the decision last year, citing the minimal impact of skipping Memphis on his FedEx ranking.

Jordan Spieth Shares Honest Take

Jordan Spieth, a three-time major champion, addressed the situation Tuesday. “You might have one or two guys do that for an event but I don’t think it will become a thing,” he said — further emphasizing that these are still “huge events against the best players in the world.”

Spieth also suggested the PGA Tour is actively working to discourage players from skipping even one playoff event, let alone multiple. “Ideally neither of them [is skipped],” he said.

Tour Officials and Veterans Are “Concerned”

Peter Malnati, a PGA Tour Policy Board player director, told reporters he was “very concerned” by the decision and hinted that changes could be coming. “There is stuff in the works,” he said, though he didn’t offer specifics.

Former Tour player Rich Beem added that the extreme Memphis heat might have played a role in McIlroy’s call. “You’re drinking like 20 bottles of water, it can be that stifling,” he noted, recalling how the weather sapped energy and affected performance.

The debate raises larger questions about the PGA Tour’s playoff format. If top players can skip events with minimal consequences, does it diminish the importance of early playoff rounds? While McIlroy’s strategy might make sense for his own performance, it puts pressure on the Tour to rethink how it rewards consistency and participation.

The FedEx St Jude Championship continues today at TPC Southwind. Whether Rory McIlroy’s absence sets a precedent or forces a policy shift remains to be seen.
