Sparks Coach Blasts ‘Dumb’ WNBA Incidents After Scary Game Moment

Another Object Thrown, Another WNBA Safety Scare

Fan behavior at WNBA games is once again under fire after a disturbing incident during the Indiana Fever vs. Los Angeles Sparks game on Tuesday night. As Kelsey Plum stood at the free-throw line, an adult object was thrown from the crowd and landed near Sophie Cunningham. Plum calmly kicked it off the floor, but the act did not go unnoticed.

This marks the third similar incident in just two weeks a troubling pattern that raises serious concerns about player safety and game-day security.

Sparks Coach Sounds Off: “It’s Dumb and Dangerous”

Sparks coach Lynne Roberts didn’t hold back after her team’s win. She expressed strong disapproval of the recent wave of disruptions.

“It’s ridiculous, and dumb,” she told reporters. “Absolutely stupid. It’s also dangerous, and player safety is No. 1. Respecting the game, all those things. I think it’s really stupid.”

Roberts’ frustration echoed that of players and fans alike, many of whom have taken to social media to demand stricter consequences for inappropriate fan actions.

The Game Deserves Better

With three incidents in such a short span, the pressure is mounting on WNBA leadership and arena staff to take more decisive action. Increased security, lifetime bans, and stronger public statements may be necessary to deter fans from putting athletes at risk.

The league has yet to issue a formal statement, but many believe swift disciplinary measures are overdue.

The WNBA is experiencing unprecedented growth and fan interest. But with that growth comes responsibility—both for fans to respect the sport and for arenas to enforce better protections. If the league wants to keep the focus on the court, it must ensure what’s happening off it doesn’t become the main story.
