Patrick Mahomes Breaks Silence After Career-Worst Season

Patrick Mahomes Breaks Silence And Sends Message to Chiefs Fans

Even Patrick Mahomes knows last season didn’t live up to his sky-high standards. Still, he led the Chiefs to their third straight Super Bowl appearance. And while Kansas City couldn’t complete the three-peat, falling 40-22 to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, Mahomes isn’t hiding from the criticism.

Speaking with USA Today’s Jarrett Bell, the two-time MVP opened up about the sting of losing on the biggest stage and his resolve to turn it all around.

“When you make it that far and then you’re at the end, it just hurts,” Mahomes said. “You put so much hard work into it. So, losing on that final step is always hard. But it’s how you respond.”

Mahomes then posed the challenge ahead: “Are we going to get even better from that loss? Are we going to find ways to make everyone better, not just one person? I feel like we’ve done that in camp. But you can’t prove it until you go out there and do it.”

Even Patrick Mahomes Admits It Wasn’t Good Enough

Statistically, Mahomes’ 2024 campaign was his worst since taking over as the Chiefs’ starter in 2018. He threw for just 3,928 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, his lowest yardage total ever.

“There’s stuff we’ve got to get better at,” he said. “Especially myself.”

Mahomes didn’t shy away from the missed opportunities: “There’s plays on the football field that I didn’t make last year, that I’ve made in previous years. At the end of the day, I’m going to do whatever it takes to win.”

He emphasized that better quarterback play would ease pressure on the defense and lift the entire team. “I’ve got to be better at executing whenever the shots are there, making those throws.”

Mahomes’ Motivation Should Scare the League

Even with his struggles, the Chiefs managed to win 15 games, 12 of them by just one score. That grit kept them alive, but Mahomes knows they can’t rely on that again.

“It just gives you a little extra in some of the workouts and those film sessions, to try to find the little things to get even better,” he said. “Sometimes when you have success, you can be complacent. But when you fall short, it’s fuel.”

The message is loud and clear: Mahomes is ready to bounce back, and the rest of the NFL has been put on notice.
