Derek Jeter Slammed for Lying Over Yankees Old-Timers’ Snub

Derek Jeter may have just found himself in an unexpected media storm, and not over a play at shortstop.

With the New York Yankees set to bring back Old-Timers’ Day on August 9 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their 2000 World Series championship team, fans were surprised to learn that Jeter, the MVP of that series, would not be attending. His reason? A schedule conflict with his daughter’s birthday.

But that didn’t sit right with everyone.

Esiason Suggests Jeter’s Yankees Excuse Doesn’t Add Up

WFAN radio host Boomer Esiason went as far as accusing Jeter of being dishonest. On air with co-host Gregg Giannotti, Esiason called Jeter’s absence “elitist” and implied that his excuse wasn’t entirely truthful.

This didn’t go unnoticed. While speaking with Tiki Barber in Cooperstown, Jeter reportedly became so heated about the accusation that Barber had to calm him down literally with water and a few drinks.

Barber relayed Jeter’s response: “He should have called me. Don’t speculate about me, just talk to me.”

Despite the backlash, Esiason didn’t back down. He hinted that he’d received an email from someone close to Jeter claiming the Yankees legend will actually be attending a different family event, not his daughter’s birthday.

“I believe there’s an inaccurate part of this story out there,” Esiason said on his show. “There is something going on, but I don’t believe it’s what everybody thinks.”

Still, Esiason admitted that whatever the true reason, it likely justifies Jeter’s absence.

Jeter vs. the Mic

This clash between a Yankees legend and a major sports media personality is unusual, especially surrounding an event meant to celebrate legacy and unity. Whether or not Jeter’s reason holds water, the tension has overshadowed what should have been a moment of nostalgia.

The Yankees’ 77th Old-Timers’ Day is set to include the first alumni game since 2019 and a tribute to the 2000 championship team. With or without Jeter, the event will remain a cherished tradition. But his absence will surely be felt.
