WNBA Refs Spark Fan Fury Over Controversial Call on Boston

No Caitlin Clark? No problem. The Indiana Fever stunned the Las Vegas Aces with a 10-point upset win, breaking out of a 2-game losing streak. But just like most of their season, the Fever’s 80–70 victory came wrapped in controversy.

This time, the spotlight was on A’ja Wilson and Aliyah Boston. Wilson appeared to foul Boston from behind, however, the officials once again called a jump ball. But it left fans outraged and Boston visibly furious.

WNBA Fans Slam Refs Over Missed Foul Call

On social media, fans didn’t hold back.

“This was called a jump ball. Seriously??? AB is absolutely fed up of this B-😭😭😭,” one fan posted.

Another wrote:

“The call was laughable… Second guessing, late fouls, jump balls after clear contact… this league won’t be taken seriously until they fix the refs.”

And this isn’t a one-off. Just this month, Tina Charles shoved Boston with only a common foul. Natasha Cloud’s hit on Clark? No whistle. Marina Mabrey’s scuffle? No ejections. It’s become a trend, and Fever fans have had enough.

Boston, Wilson, and the Officiating Double Standard

Boston finished with just 13 points on 6-of-18 shooting and zero free throws in 35 minutes. However, this is a rare feat for a WNBA big. “What other starting big averages 2 FTs a game?” a fan asked. “She gets zero calls.”

Meanwhile, A’ja Wilson seems to benefit. Fans remembered the July 4 game, where Wilson hit Lexie Hull from behind again, jump ball, not a foul.

Boston and Wilson have built a rivalry this season. Wilson’s even been caught accusing Boston of flopping. When Boston came out physical in this final regular-season clash, no one was surprised. But fans argue she’s being unfairly punished for it.

Even Kelsey Plum voiced frustrations:

“I don’t understand how that’s six free throws playing 40 minutes and touching the paint every play. It’s absurd.”

The WNBA needs answers and better officiating before the playoffs heat up even more.

Finally, what’s your take? Are the refs doing their jobs, or are players and fans right to be frustrated?
