Tarik Skubal Temporarily Exits Tigers After Personal Announcement

Tigers Ace Tarik Skubal Steps Away as Family Prepares for Baby No. 2

Tarik Skubal, the Detroit Tigers’ ace and reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, has taken a brief leave from the team to welcome his second child with wife Jessica. The Tigers placed Skubal on the paternity list Wednesday, shortly after his most recent start on Sunday Night Baseball.

This short-term absence comes in the middle of another dominant season from Skubal. And he is once again proving to be one of the best pitchers in baseball. With a 10-3 record, 2.19 ERA, and 4.9 WAR, Skubal is among the frontrunners to repeat as the AL’s top pitcher in 2025.

Tigers Stay Hot, Even Without Their Ace

Despite losing their top arm, the Detroit Tigers continue to look like serious contenders. The team holds a 9-game lead over the second-place Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central, sitting at 60-42 just past the 100-game mark.

They’ve carried their 2024 postseason momentum into this season. And evolving from surprise underdogs to legitimate American League powerhouses. Their offense ranks near the top in key categories, and their bullpen has quietly been one of the league’s most effective.

Now, with Skubal unavailable for at least a few days, Detroit will test its pitching depth. Troy Melton, a promising young arm from the minors, has been called up and is set to make his MLB debut Wednesday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Skubal Still Listed for Friday, but That May Change

Interestingly, Skubal is still listed as the projected starter for Friday night’s showdown with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to ESPN. However, depending on the timing of the birth and team priorities, that could change.

Regardless, the Tigers have shown they can win without relying solely on their ace. But make no mistake, Skubal’s return will be vital as the team prepares for the stretch run.

The Tigers are not just battling for the AL Central crown, they’re in the race for the American League’s No. 1 seed. With the Astros and Blue Jays close behind, every game counts.

For now, though, all eyes are on the Skubal family as they celebrate a personal milestone. And when Tarik returns, expect him to bring the same focus and fire that’s defined his breakout into stardom.
