Ranking the 20 Most Overrated Programs in College Football History

College football fans love to argue about who’s the best, but the real fun starts when you talk about who’s been getting way too much credit. Some programs live off hype, history, and decades-old trophies while rarely living up to the expectations that come with their names.

Whether it’s constant media praise, inflated recruiting classes, or national titles that haven’t been relevant since rotary phones were a thing, these schools have fooled plenty of fans over the years. From bluebloods stuck in the past to schools that get a little too much love for doing very little, here are the 20 most overrated programs in college football history.

20. Arizona State

Arizona State Sun Devils running back Cam Skattebo (4) looks for a route through the Texas defense in the first overtime period as the Texas Longhorns play the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Peach Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, Jan. 1, 2025.

The vibes are great and the uniforms are flashy, but the results have been mostly average. Arizona State always feels like they’re one year away… every single year.

19. Texas A&M

They’ve got the money, the fanbase, and the weird traditions—but the trophy case is gathering dust. Aggies fans talk like perennial contenders, but rarely act like it on the field.

18. North Carolina

They get ranked every preseason like it’s a birthright, and then October rolls around. For all the hype around potential and branding, actual football success is in short supply.

17. Nebraska

Yes, they used to dominate… back when we all had dial-up internet. Since then, it’s been a slow, painful decline full of coaching changes and misplaced optimism.

16. South Carolina

They’ve got a rabid fanbase and a stadium that rocks, but the Gamecocks rarely deliver on the promise. One good year every decade doesn’t justify the constant media attention.

15. Tennessee

Tennessee offensive lineman Cooper Mays (63), wide receiver Bru McCoy (5), and quarterback Nico Iamaleava (8) surround running back Dylan Sampson (6) in celebration after Sampson's touchdown during an NCAA college football game against Alabama on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, in Knoxville. Tenn.

The Vols still get treated like they’re a powerhouse, even though the glory days are a distant memory. Every time they start 3–0, people start whispering “national title,” and then reality sets in.

14. Miami

The swagger is eternal, but the wins sure aren’t. They’ve been coasting on early-2000s nostalgia longer than most of their current players have been alive.

13. Louisville

Louisville quarterback Harrison Bailey (15) hands off to Isaac Brown (25) against Washington at the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on Dec. 31, 2024.

They’re always lurking in the “dark horse” conversation, but never actually break through. One Heisman winner doesn’t erase years of underachievement.

12. Oregon

Oregon Ducks defensive back Dontae Manning (8) warms up during the College Football Playoff quarterfinal against the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. on Jan. 1, 2025. Ohio State won 41-21.

The branding is elite, but the resume isn’t as impressive as people think. Despite all the Nike money and cool uniforms, they’ve never been able to win the big one.

11. Michigan State

People love to overinflate a couple of solid years into some grand narrative. They’ll have a nice run, then vanish for half a decade before doing it all over again.

10. UCLA

It’s LA, it’s shiny, and it’s always “on the verge”—but it never quite gets there. The Bruins are forever the kings of looking the part and falling short.

9. Arkansas

They play in the SEC, but usually feel like they’re along for the ride. For all the talk of tradition and potential, there’s not much recent success to show for it.

8. Penn State

They love to talk about being a “blueblood,” but haven’t done much on the national stage since the early 2000s. Always good, rarely great, and constantly overhyped.

7. Florida State

After a brief dynasty and a Jameis-fueled title, it’s been a whole lot of mediocrity. The name still carries weight, but the product hasn’t in a while.

6. Baylor

They had a flashy run under Art Briles, but people often forget how shallow the tradition is. For all the recent attention, they’ve never been a truly elite program.

5. Ole Miss

Feb 1, 2025; Mobile, AL, USA; National team defensive lineman David Walker of Central Arkansas (33) and National team defensive lineman Jah Joyner of Minnesota (17) pressures American team quarterback Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss (2) during the first half of the 2025 Senior Bowl football game at Hancock Whitney Stadium. The Rebels love the spotlight but rarely deliver when it matters most. They’re all style and sizzle—until that midseason collapse hits like clockwork.

4. Texas

Dec 21, 2024; Austin, Texas, USA; Texas Longhorns wide receiver Ryan Wingo (5) and running back Jaydon Blue (23) and quarterback Arch Manning (16) and wide receiver Matthew Golden (2) huddle with the team during the game between the Texas Longhorns and the Clemson Tigers in the CFP National Playoff First Round at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. They’ve got the biggest budget and loudest fans, but “back” has been a lie for over a decade. Every year feels like the year, and every year ends in disappointment.

3. Notre Dame

They get prime-time slots and playoff love like it’s the 1940s, but modern results rarely justify it. The Irish are more myth than menace at this point.

They act like national titles are still flowing, but it’s been rough since the Pete Carroll days. The Trojans always win the offseason and often lose the games that matter.

They talk like a top-tier program, but it’s been a carousel of coaches and collapses. For a team that wants to be considered elite, they sure haven’t looked it lately.
